Abraham Lincoln at Peoria

Posted by sailerd  Published in Antebellum (1840-1861), Recent Scholarship

The Gilder Lehrman Institute just added a new podcast on Abraham Lincoln’s political career during the early 1850s. In “Lincoln at Peoria: The Turning Point,” Lewis E. Lehrman explains how in October 1854 Lincoln “argu[ed ] that slavery was incompatible with the Founders’ vision of America as articulated in the Declaration of Independence.”  While House […]

“Naval Officers and their Uniform”

Posted by sailerd  Published in Antebellum (1840-1861), Historic Periodicals

To see naval officers in uniform walking around New York city in 2009 is unremarkable. Yet in November 1859 a lieutenant wrote the New York Herald to address the fact “that a great number of naval officers are seen daily in the streets and public places in uniform.” While careful to note that he was […]

This project provides free access to courses on a variety of subjects, including Professor David Blight’s HIST 119: The Civil War and Reconstruction Era, 1845-1877. This is not simply a single lecture. Instead, you can listen or watch all twenty seven classes. […]

"Eminently successful in its foreign & domestic policy”

Posted by sailerd  Published in Civil War (1861-1865), Letters & Diaries, Rare Books

I want to highlight an interesting letter that James Buchanan wrote about a week after President Abraham Lincoln’s Inauguration on March 4, 1861. Despite four “stormy and turbulent” years in the White House, Buchanan told New York Herald editor James Bennett that ultimately “[his] administration [had] been eminently successful in its foreign & domestic policy.” […]

The Economist on President Lincoln

Posted by sailerd  Published in Civil War (1861-1865), Historic Periodicals

“THE success of the Republican candidate for the Presidency in the United States will prove one of the greatest events of modern times” –   Economist, November 24, 1860. This editorial, along with two others from 1865, were just posted in the From the archive section of the Economist’s website. This British newspaper considered the Republican […]

David Willis House

Posted by sailerd  Published in Places to Visit

The New York Times just published an interesting article about a new museum in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The David Willis House, which opens tomorrow (February 12, 2009), was where President Abraham Lincoln spent the night before he gave the Gettysburg Address. Yet as Sean Hamill explains, “the museum’s larger purpose…is to tell what happened after the […]

Digital Resources

Posted by sailerd  Published in 19th Century (1840-1880), Lesson Plans, Maps, Video

History teachers should check out Northern Illinois University’s digital collections. While some collections focus only on Illinois history, others cover a broad range of topics such as the Mexican-American War and election campaigns (1840 – 1860). Each site offers primary sources, maps, lesson plans, audio files, and other materials. Be sure to take a look […]

City Maps

Posted by sailerd  Published in 19th Century (1840-1880), Maps

While House Divided has a large collection of maps, I want to highlight some the interesting city maps that are available. You can find maps of cities like Boston, Baltimore, Buffalo, Chicago, Cincinnati, and many more. Be sure to check out the Washington D.C. map since it provides the location of specific buildings, including the […]

New Article on the South & Slavery

Posted by sailerd  Published in Antebellum (1840-1861), Lesson Plans

While I already mentioned Teaching the Journal of American History in another post, I want to highlight their recent update. Lacy Ford’s article from the June 2008 issue (Reconfiguring the Old South: ‘Solving’ the Problems of Slavery, 1787-1838) is now available for free.  The author provides six interesting exercises that you could use in class. […]
