This site serves as a vehicle for descendants, stewards, conservators, scholars, humanists, interpreters and enthusiasts to connect their efforts to honor Pennsylvania’s African American patriots of the Civil War. The site encourages engagement in:
- USCT living history presentations and commemorations
- educational workshops, forums, panels, and open dialogues
- the preservation of USCT muster rolls and artifacts
- the conservation of USCT final resting places
The site grew out of series of Civil War 150 anniversary commemorations that culminated in 2013 throughout Pennsylvania and across the nation. Among the events honored:
- the invasion of the Commonwealth
- the battle of Gettysburg
- Lincoln’s Gettysburg address
- the recruitment of 180,000 Black men for the United States Colored Troop
- the development of Camp William Penn
- the achievements of Pennsylvania’s Black soldiers at Fort Wagner, Wilmington, and Fort Hudson
- the historic 1865 Harrisburg Grand Review
