Weiss Center for the Arts

NOTE; Weiss will be closed to Teagle seminar participants in summer 2021

Weiss is known often for its frequent number of concerts in Rubendall Recital Hall, a setting that is unmatched for the performing arts at Dickinson. The opportunities at Weiss offer students much more, however, than through performances. Weiss’s four stories allow for students to pursue their artistic freedom through music or studio art.

Weiss offers classes and lessons not only to those primarily studying music, but also to those who want to learn to play an instrument for the first time, those who can play an instrument but want to learn theory, or maybe just want to learn music history. Hardly any professor is more enthusiastic about music than Professor Wlodarski. Lessons are well worth the cost in my experience and those of others as well, but the music department offers various scholarships for students. In addition, students in ensemble may qualify for free lessons like I have as a member of the Jazz Ensemble

The Trout Gallery in Weiss displays at least one different art exhibition every semester that are always thoughtful. Tours are offered for free, and even available in a foreign language at times. Art history and art classes are available to all students as well, with spacious studios open from very early to late hours.

The HUB

The HUB may stand for the Holland Union Building, but it really is the hub of activity at Dickinson. Need to grab a bite? A place to meet up to grab a coffee or smoothie? A quiet room to get some work done? These are just a few of the reasons why students go to the HUB every single day of the semester.

The cafeteria, popularly known as “the caf,’ is there for your apatite regardless of its size, preferences, or necessities. My morning truthfully doesn’t get started until I scarf down their hash browns. Sampling, choice of portion, and a variety of stations makes it a flexible option for dining. For those on the go, Union Station, “the snar,” offers cooked or premade fresh food throughout the day. The Devil’s Den, our convenience store and the Underground’s smoothies are also quick options.

Clubs and events are also a significant parts of the HUB. I find foreign language tables to be the best way to improve skills on campus outside of the classroom. If you’d like to help represent music and play rising artists over the air waves, WDCV-FM allows students to have a radio show. Next to the station there’s also dance studio.
