(\u201cSlave Stampede,\u201d <em>The Liberator<\/em>, Boston, MA, February 22, 1856, <em>Accessible Archives<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li>Some newspaper reports detailed the failed group escapes. On February 2, 1849, the <em>North Star<\/em> wrote, &#8220;we learn that about forty negroes had made arrangements to leave their masters in Woodford County [KY]<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">, on Saturday night last, but the plot was discovered just in time to defeat its execution.\u201d The report continued, &#8220;t<\/span><\/span>he negroes all had free papers. According to the plan of operations, each was to steal a horse and cross the Ohio river<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"> before <\/span>day<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">. They were <\/span>betrayed<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"> by a negro to whom the plot was <\/span>disclosed<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"> and who was requested to <\/span>join in<span
