{"id":3492,"date":"2022-11-07T12:11:52","date_gmt":"2022-11-07T12:11:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/stampedes\/?p=3492"},"modified":"2022-11-07T12:16:54","modified_gmt":"2022-11-07T12:16:54","slug":"colorizing-historic-illustrations-from-stills-underground-railroad-1872","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/stampedes\/colorizing-historic-illustrations-from-stills-underground-railroad-1872\/","title":{"rendered":"Colorizing Historic Illustrations from Still&#8217;s Underground Railroad (1872)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Forbes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At the House Divided Project , we are starting to colorize the dozens of richly engraved illustrations by John Osler and other artists which first appeared in William Still\u2019s <em>Underground Road\u00a0<\/em>(1872).\u00a0 Most of these scenes depict dramatic Underground Railroad escapes documented in the antebellum records of the Philadelphia Vigilance Committee.\u00a0 Over the years, we&#8217;ve experimented with <a href=\"https:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/blogdivided\/2017\/07\/27\/entering-oz-bringing-color-to-history\/\">several other colorizing projects<\/a>, including most notably for the <a href=\"https:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/slavery\/our-banner-image\/\">Dickinson &amp; Brown (1849), colorized by Forbes (<a href=\"https:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/18059\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"noopener\">House Divided Project<\/a>)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>When in the process of colorizing, sometimes you will encounter historic illustrations which were not created to look fully realistic and which require <a href=\"https:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/stampedes\/how-to-colorize-images-in-photoshop\/\">a different approach to colorizing than with historic photographs<\/a>.\u00a0 One way to colorize such images is to use brighter colors and less subtle tint differences; in that window&#8217;s upper left corner.\u00a0 Select &#8220;Open&#8221;, and then select the file you wish to colorize.<\/li>\n<li>In the same line of options from which you selected &#8220;File&#8221;, look for &#8220;Layer&#8221;.\u00a0 Click on that word, and then select &#8220;New Layer&#8230;&#8221; from the drop-down menu.<\/li>\n<li>When you click &#8220;New Layer&#8230;&#8221;, a window should open, and the lowest option on the window should be labeled &#8220;Fill with&#8221;.\u00a0 Select &#8220;Transparency&#8221;.\u00a0 Make sure that the &#8220;Opacity&#8221; option is at 100, and\u00a0then click &#8220;OK&#8221;.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2160 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/teagle\/files\/2022\/11\/Pic-1-for-Blog-Post-300x169.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" \/><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Select the Paintbrush tool out of the grid of possible tools in the upper left corner of the screen.\u00a0 A small window should pop up, titled &#8220;Tool Options&#8221;.\u00a0 (If this window does not show up, see step 4a.)\u00a0 In that window, there will be a section titled &#8220;Mode&#8221; which should be clickable.\u00a0 Open its drop-down menu, scroll to &#8220;Hard light&#8221;, and select that option.<\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2161 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/teagle\/files\/2022\/11\/Pic-2-for-Blog-Post-300x169.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"654\" height=\"369\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">(4a. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">To access &#8220;Tool Options&#8221; (if it does not pop up automatically when you begin to use the Paintbrush), click on &#8220;Windows&#8221; in the menu bar at the top of the page.\u00a0 Hover your mouse over &#8220;Dockable Dialogues&#8221;, and you should see &#8220;Tool Options&#8221; at the top of the drop-down menu that appears.\u00a0 Click &#8220;Tool Options&#8221;.\u00a0 A window in which you can adjust opacity levels, brush size, and other metrics as you please should open.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Now you can begin colorization!\u00a0 Below the paintbrush icon in the corner of the screen, there will be two squares: one black and one white.\u00a0 Click on the square to the left and on top of the other.\u00a0 This allows you to select a specific color using various scales, and then use that color on your illustration.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2162 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/teagle\/files\/2022\/11\/Pic-3-for-Blog-Post-300x169.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"646\" height=\"364\" \/><\/li>\n<li>After you pick a color, click and drag on top of the illustration, and color should appear and follow underneath your mouse.\u00a0 It should not remove the picture&#8217;s details from view; it will just color over them.\u00a0 If the brushstrokes are too opaque or unable to be seen, that can be fixed in the &#8220;Tool Options&#8221; window.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2163 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/teagle\/files\/2022\/11\/Pic-4-for-Blog-Post-300x169.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"635\" height=\"358\" \/><\/li>\n<li>If a color you have chosen does not show up optimally, it is possible to edit.\u00a0 In the same line of options as &#8220;File&#8221; and &#8220;Layer&#8221; is a &#8220;Color&#8221; option.\u00a0 Click on that to open a drop-down menu, and then select &#8220;Hue Saturation&#8221;.\u00a0 Once you click that option, a window with several scales inside of it should show up.\u00a0 &#8220;Hue&#8221;, &#8220;Lightness&#8221;, and &#8220;Saturation&#8221;
