The controversial 1850 Fugitive Slave Law provoked a bitter national debate over open borders, due process, family separation federal power and northern states&#8217; rights. It also involved Dickinson College, because the nation&#8217;s most aggressive fugitive slave commissioner (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HjS4JPoM_Rk\">Richard McAllister<\/a>) was a graduate of the institution. Brown in 1849.\u00a0 He was also part of the entourage who helped Mary Brown recover and later bury her husband John Brown&#8217;s body after his execution near Harpers Ferry, Virginia in 1859.\u00a0 During the Civil War, McKim was a leader in the freedmen&#8217;s relief effort, even traveling to South Carolina to meet with former slaves.\u00a0 After the conflict, he continued to press for aid to the freed people, civil rights for all, and for sectional reconciliation.\u00a0 He also became a founder of\u00a0<em>The Nation<\/em>, a leading progressive periodical that continues to be published today.\u00a0 McKim died in 1874 in New Jersey, remembered at the time of his death as one of the nation&#8217;s most influential and effective abolitionists and civil rights reformers.<\/p>\n<div><div class=\"su-spacer\" style=\"height:20px\"><\/div><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Logistical Details<\/strong><\/div>\n<p><strong>Date &amp; West Street.\u00a0 The new &#8220;Dickinson and Slavery&#8221; exhibit will feature special panels that commemorate the college&#8217;s ties to slavery as well as provide an extended discussion about the former slaves and descendants who later became an essential part of the Dickinson community following the Civil War.\u00a0 Visitors will learn, for example, about the remarkable story of Robert Young, the longest serving college employee of the nineteenth century.\u00a0 Young was a former slave who fought to get his eldest son admitted to the college in the 1880s, during a period when integration of American higher education was still rare and considered controversial.\u00a0 They will discover new details from the life of Henry W. Spradley, a former escaped slave, Union army veteran, and longtime college janitor, whose death in 1897 was marked on campus by canceling classes and holding an all-community memorial service.\u00a0 And finally, visitors will experience the sometimes-complicated affection that generations of Dickinson students held for a former enslaved man, Noah Pinkney, and his wife Carrie (&#8220;Aunt Noah&#8221;), who provided food and refreshments on the west side of Carlisle into the early twentieth century.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Read the <a Workshop<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph\">On Saturday, March 23, 2019, the House Divided Project is planning to host a Saturday teacher workshop for K-12 educators that will be designed to help share information and new resources about the teaching of slavery and its legacy.\u00a0 Using the experiences of Dickinson College and its ties to slavery as a starting point, presenters will demonstrate a variety of new multi-media tools and specially designed lesson plans that will cover a host of key topics connected to the rise and fall of American slavery.\u00a0 The event will culminate with a reception and an evening keynote address.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph\">This workshop on slavery represents the culmination of several years of service here at Dickinson providing free training to a national network of social studies educators.\u00a0 In 2007, the House Divided Project hosted a special symposium for classroom teachers on the anniversary of the Dred Scott Case featuring scholars Akhil Reed Amar (Yale), Steven Hahn (Penn), and Lea VanderVelde (Iowa).\u00a0 In 2008, the subject was the Lincoln-Douglas Debates and the participating guest scholars included Mark Neely (Penn State) and Robert Engs (Penn).\u00a0 For a few summers, we also hosted an NEH Landmarks of American History and Culture workshop for teachers on the Underground Railroad.\u00a0 Those busy sessions included special presentations from a wide array of historians, including Fergus Bordewich (independent), Catherine Clinton (UT-San Antonio), Spencer Crew (George Mason), Jonathan Earle (Kansas), Kate Clifford Larson (independent), James Oakes (CUNY), Andrew Torget (UVA), and Tracey Weis (Millersville).\u00a0 Most recently, in March 2016, we organized a major conference on the 150th anniversary of Reconstruction, featuring historian Eric Foner (Columbia) as keynote speaker, with panel discussions and presentations from other noted scholars such as Gregory Downs (UC \/ Davis), Jeffrey Rosen (National Constitution Center), and Anne Sarah Rubin (UMBC).<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Full video of practically embodies the stirring promise and ultimate betrayal of black freedom during the Reconstruction period following the Civil War.\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">We also recently collaborated with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History for their Google Arts exhibit on <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" href=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/emancipation\/\">Emancipation<\/a>.\u00a0 The Emancipation Digital Classroom also includes a special <a href=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/emancipation\/spielberg\/\">Unofficial Teacher&#8217;s Guide to Spielberg&#8217;s &#8220;Lincoln&#8221; (2012)<\/a> &#8211;a remarkable Hollywood movie about the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment.\u00a0 We also have a separate site devoted to a multi-media edition of <a href=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/lincoln\/\">Lincoln&#8217;s Writings<\/a>, which includes 150 of his most teachable documents, many of which concern slavery.\u00a0 In 2011, we partnered with the OAH Magazine of History to create a <a href=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/oahmagazine\/\">web supplement<\/a> for an issue devoted to exploring the causes of the Civil War and the extent to which slavery was behind the conflict.\u00a0 \u00a0The year before (2010), we also partnered with the National Civil War Museum to create <a href=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/stoker\/\">an exhibit<\/a> about the letters of a Texas slaveholder and reluctant Confederate soldier named William Elisha Stoker.\u00a0 \u00a02010 was a busy year.\u00a0 We also created <a href=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/grandreview\/\">a partnership site<\/a> that summer with a variety of state agencies and black heritage groups commemorating the 1865 &#8220;Grand Review&#8221; of black troops that occurred in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/slavery\/files\/2018\/10\/NTF-Logo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-409\" src=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/slavery\/files\/2018\/10\/NTF-Logo-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"NTF\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 250%;\">Student Projects<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/thomascooperdickinson.weebly.com\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-268\" src=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/slavery\/files\/2018\/08\/Screen-Shot-2018-08-23-at-12.39.53-PM-300x152.png\" undergraduates at Dickinson College have been working on slavery or slavery-related online projects in recent years.\u00a0 Participants in the &#8220;American Slavery&#8221; seminar, for example, have created a series of compelling websites on Dickinsonians associated with slavery.\u00a0 Rachel Morgan produced a website about college founder <a href=\"https:\/\/benjaminrush-slavery.weebly.com\/\">Benjamin Rush<\/a> and his complicated relationship with slavery.\u00a0 Morgan also built a website on Mary Johnson Dillon, the daughter of Dickinson&#8217;s wartime president, and her experiences during the Civil War, entitled:\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/marydillonscarlisle.weebly.com\/\">Mary Dillon&#8217;s Carlisle<\/a>. Becca Stout detailed the pro-slavery views of former Dickinson professor <a href=\"https:\/\/thomascooperdickinson.weebly.com\/\">Thomas Cooper<\/a> and the strange story behind how a student residence hall got named after him in the 1990s. Cooper Wingert produced a web exhibit about <a href=\"https:\/\/richardmcallister.weebly.com\/\">Richard McAllister<\/a> (Class of 1840), who became one of the nation&#8217;s most notorious fugitive slave commissioner in the 1850s. Most recently, Maeve Thistle built<a href=\"https:\/\/johntaylorcuddy.weebly.com\/\"> a web exhibit<\/a> for a freshman seminar on &#8220;Dickinson &amp; Slavery&#8221; about John Taylor Cuddy, a young Union soldier from Carlisle who actually opposed the Emancipation Proclamation.\u00a0 Rachel Morgan also built a website as<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Other Dickinson students have been working to create teaching resources in support of the &#8220;North American Slave Narratives&#8221; collection from Documenting the American South (University of North Carolina).\u00a0 These freely available full-text recollections by American slaves are being annotated by students in Prof. Pinsker&#8217;s classes, with short, blog-post style summaries accompanied by custom-made Google maps that include helpful images and text excerpts from the original narrative.\u00a0 We currently have posts available for reminiscences by ex-slaves Josiah Henson (by Maria Villotti),\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-311pinsker\/2017\/11\/04\/harriet-jacobs-agency-of-a-slave-woman\/\">Harriet Jacobs<\/a> (by Rachel Morgan),\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-311pinsker\/2017\/11\/06\/paul-jennings-the-madison-staple\/\">Paul Jennings<\/a> (by Jack Lodge),\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-117pinsker\/2016\/11\/08\/elizabeth-keckley-1818-1907-the-path-to-freed-womanhood\/\">Elizabeth Keckly<\/a> (by Abigail Stasior), <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-311pinsker\/2017\/11\/04\/william-parker-runaway-slave-and-abolitionist\/\">William Parker<\/a> (by George Gilbert),\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-117pinsker\/2016\/11\/13\/slave-narrative-2\/\">Mary Prince<\/a> (by Lauren Benton), <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-117pinsker\/2015\/11\/01\/susie-king-taylor\/\">Susie King Taylor<\/a> (by Michael Borsch), <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-118pinsker\/up-from-slavery\/\">Booker T. Washington<\/a> (by Matthew Pinsker), and <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-311pinsker\/2017\/11\/05\/the-narrative-of-james-williams\/\">James Williams<\/a> (by Cooper Wingert).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/embed?mid=1LFdMqaCljs1CdNzm4ZGpRi0GXGk\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Students at Dickinson have also been creating short video documentary films about slavery-related subjects.\u00a0 One of the most intriguing of these efforts has been an investigative feature produced by Colin Macfarlane (Class of 2012) on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=p-2AMUGgtqc\">Henry W. Spradley<\/a>, an escaped slave who eventually became a beloved employee at Dickinson College.\u00a0 In 2009, Don Sailer also created a compelling narrative of a Texas slaveholder named <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NqaUk4R38uk&amp;t=\">William Elisha Stoker<\/a>.\u00a0 David Park helped narrate and produce a succinct documentary on the <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/RTqfpZkoXAQ\">Lincoln-Douglas Debates<\/a>.\u00a0 More recently, Rachel Morgan and Sam Weisman produced a short film about secessionist students on the eve of their departure from Dickinson in April 1861, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-mwqmvdwJgg&amp;t=\">Autograph Book<\/a> that they signed for a Pennsylvania friend.\u00a0 But we have also had several excellent short biographical films on Dickinson graduates from the sectional era, including President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6ak3AmE9z6M\">James Buchanan<\/a>\u00a0(by Trevor Diamond), abolitionist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NDMtmw82orU&amp;t=\">Moncure Conway<\/a> (by Sam Weisman), fugitive slave commissioner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HjS4JPoM_Rk&amp;t=\">Richard McAllister<\/a>\u00a0(by Cooper Wingert), antislavery professor <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/zMMhEM7oYBg\">John McClintock<\/a>\u00a0(by Frank Kline), and pro-slavery jurist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NApFlFD4Xxs\">Roger B. Taney<\/a>\u00a0(by Sarah Goldberg).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/p-2AMUGgtqc\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/>\nIn addition to the film about Henry Spradley (above), we have also seen a number of students produce sophisticated multi-media work about Reconstruction and the legacy of slavery.\u00a0Ryan Schutte created <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-211pinsker\/2016\/11\/04\/1548\/\">a compelling narrative post and video<\/a> to describe the horrors at Eufaula, Alabama during the 1874 elections.
