His work on this project\u00a0has been made possible by generous institutional support from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.strategicstudiesinstitute.army.mil\/\" target=\"_blank\">Strategic Studies Institute at the US Army War College<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dickinson College<\/a>\u00a0and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newamerica.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">New America Foundation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This exhibition is part of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/lincoln\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lincoln&#8217;s Writings: The Multi-Media Edition<\/a>, a website created for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gilderlehrman.org\/programs-exhibitions\/understanding-lincoln-graduate-course\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Understanding Lincoln&#8221;<\/a> online graduate course (2013, 2014, 2016) which is co-produced by the <a href=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/\" target=\"_blank\">House Divided Project at Dickinson Colleg<\/a>e and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gilderlehrman.org\/\">Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.strategicstudiesinstitute.army.mil\/pubs\/people.cfm?authorID=438\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Jeffrey McCausland<\/a> from the Strategic Studies Institute and Dickinson College assisted in organizing and moderating a series of expert panels on &#8220;Presidents at War&#8221; in June and July 2014 that have been essential in providing content and context to this exhibition. \u00a0Special thanks to the panelists: \u00a0John Altenburg, Sidney Blumenthal, Conrad Crane, Kimberly Dozier, Paul Eaton, Louis Fisher, Linda Mason, and Thom Shanker. \u00a0A brief profile of each panelist is <a href=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/2013\/06\/06\/understanding-lincoln-panels-open-to-public\/\" target=\"_blank\">available here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>An exchange during an earlier panel, however, for the &#8220;Understanding Lincoln&#8221; course helped inspire this exhibition (and is now featured in the Chronology of Powers pathway). \u00a0Panelists Michael Lind, Richard Norton Smith, James Swanson, and Craig Symonds engaged in a fascinating\u00a0back-and-forth over war powers\u00a0during a 2013 C-SPAN televised debate\u00a0on the provocative topic of &#8220;What Would Lincoln Do?&#8221; which served as a forum for exploring how Lincoln&#8217;s legacy has been used and abused by modern-day politicians. \u00a0A brief profile of each panelist from the 2013 session is <a href=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/blogdivided\/2013\/10\/05\/introducing-what-would-lincoln-do\/\" target=\"_blank\">available here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Excerpts from Matthew Pinsker&#8217;s previous writings on war powers have also been adapted for elements of this exhibition, including: \u201cThe Limits of Presidential War Powers,\u201d ABA <em>Insights <\/em>magazine (Winter 2009);\u201cWould Abe Lincoln Be Into Drones?\u201d <em>Zocalo Public Square<\/em> (5\/6\/13);\u00a0&#8220;Abraham Lincoln and the Obligations of International Law,\u201d <em>SSI Articles<\/em> (6\/13\/13); and \u201cObama Fails Lincoln Lesson on Syria,\u201d <em>USA Today, <\/em>11\/11\/13.<\/p>\n<p>Several K-12 educators who have participated in the &#8220;Understanding Lincoln&#8221; online graduate course have also had their work or insights featured within this exhibition, including Mary Beth Donnelly, Richard Ochoa, Evan Oftedal, Tammie Senders, Cynthia Smith, and Michael VanWambeke.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Matthew Pinsker serves as the principal writer and curator for the &#8220;Lincoln and War Powers&#8221; online exhibition.
