{"id":3663,"date":"2014-08-30T23:11:37","date_gmt":"2014-08-30T23:11:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/lincoln\/?page_id=3663"},"modified":"2014-09-10T14:39:47","modified_gmt":"2014-09-10T14:39:47","slug":"lincolns-writings-and-the-common-core","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/lincoln\/by-k12-standards\/lincolns-writings-and-the-common-core\/","title":{"rendered":"Lincoln&#8217;s Writings and the Common Core"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>Overview<\/h3>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.corestandards.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Common Core State Standards (CCSS)<\/a> have been adopted by a vast majority of states for their K-12 public schools. \u00a0They are designed to promote higher standards in reading and math in order to help American students perform better on international assessments of learning and become more competitive in the global economy. \u00a0Common Core reading standards emphasize close readings of primary source texts, including non-fiction, in ways that might suggest\u00a0greater opportunities to teach political writers such as Abraham Lincoln across the curriculum. \u00a0In particular, CCSS has offered <a href=\"http:\/\/www.corestandards.org\/ELA-Literacy\/\" target=\"_blank\">specific literacy standards for History \/ Social Studies<\/a> at three levels across grades 6-12 that would obviously benefit from close readings of Lincoln&#8217;s greatest speeches, letters, and documents. \u00a0<em>Lincoln&#8217;s Writings: The Multi-Media Edition<\/em>\u00a0aims to support\u00a0educators who are trying to implement these challenging new expectations. \u00a0On this page, we have provided a discussion forum featuring short personal narratives from various K-12 educators from across the country who have described their experiences (and challenges) using new technologies and the resources of <em>Lincoln&#8217;s Writings<\/em> to help meet Common Core objectives. \u00a0Below that forum, we have also featured direct links to the grade level standards, recommended documents sets from within this website, and model projects.<\/p>\n<h3>Discussion Forum<\/h3>\n<p>Jennifer Baniewicz, <a href=\"https:\/\/storify.com\/Jbaniewicz\/technology-in-the-classroom-lincoln-would-approve\" target=\"_blank\">Technology in the Classroom: Lincoln Would Approve<\/a>,\u00a0<em>Storify,\u00a0<\/em>August 2014<\/p>\n<p>Alexandra Economou, <a href=\"https:\/\/storify.com\/aeconomou\/debunking-the-lincoln-myth-using-inquiry-1\" target=\"_blank\">Debunking the Lincoln Myth<\/a>,\u00a0<em>Storify,\u00a0<\/em>August 2014<\/p>\n<p>Jordan Kasler, <a href=\"https:\/\/storify.com\/jkasler\/great-moments-with-mr-lincoln\" target=\"_blank\">Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln &amp;
