Slotten, <a href=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/library\/Slotten2000.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;The McClintock Slave Riot of 1847,&#8221;<\/a> <em>Cumberland County History<\/em> 17 (2000): 14-35. <\/p>\n<p>While Dickinson College Professor\u00a0\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/6207\" target=\"_blank\">John McClintock<\/a> spent twelve long, difficult, though happy years in Carlisle,\u201d Martha C. Slotten <a href=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/library\/Slotten2000.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">notes<\/a> that for him any \u201csense of belonging\u2026was quickly dispelled in the riot on the square\u201d in June 1847. Two slaveowners from Hagerstown, Maryland \u2013 James Kennedy and Howard Hollingsworth \u2013 arrived in <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/9346\" target=\"_blank\">Cumberland County<\/a> and caught three fugitive slaves in <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/19492\" target=\"_blank\">Shippensburg<\/a>. \u00a0They brought the fugitives to Carlisle for a hearing early on June 2, 1847.
