Google Books<\/a> is a great resource for primary sources as they provide free access to books in the public domain that would not be in most library collections. Google has partnered <\/a>with a number of university libraries, including Columbia, Harvard, and Oxford, to scan books in their collections. While some tips are listed below, you can find more comprehensive overview at the Google Books Help<\/a> page.<\/p>\n

Using Google Books<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
\"\"<\/a><\/td>\nNot all of the books are\u00a0online in full – Google organizes their collection into four categories: Full View, Limited Preview, Snippet View, and No Preview Available. You can learn more about each category here<\/a>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Searching Google Books<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n
\"\"<\/td>\nGoogle Books<\/a><\/strong> provides a number of different ways to sort search results, including sort by relevance\/date, document type, and time period. Select \u201cFull View\u201d to limit search results to those sources that are in the public domain.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
\"\"<\/a><\/td>\nNeed information about a specific person?<\/strong> Try searching by entering \u201cLast Name,\u00a0First Name\u201d and a key term such as \u201cEncyclopedia\u201d \u201cCyclopedia\u201d\u00a0\u201cBiographical\u201d or \u201cLibrary\u201d (quotations included).
