While newspapers included editorials and reports written by their own staff in every issue, many also published content from other papers. As you read a newspaper from this period, it is important to watch out for these types of articles. <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/view\/docs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Document records<\/a> in House Divided include an \u201cOriginal Source\u201d field, which indicates whether that article was original published in another paper or contained an excerpt. Some papers, such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/29971?size=_original\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ripley (OH) <\/a><em><a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/29971?size=_original\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bee<\/a><\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/29971?size=_original\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">,<\/a> might include the original publication above the article title.<\/p>\n<p>Other newspaper, such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/31876?size=_original\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chicago (IL) <\/a><em><a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/31876?size=_original\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Press and Tribune<\/a><\/em>, noted the original source directly below the article title. The <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/33779\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bangor (ME) <\/a><em><a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/31835?size=_original\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Whig and Courier<\/a><\/em>, however, usually gave credit to \u00a0the other publications at the end of the article. As uniform standards did not exist, editors\u00a0adopted their\u00a0own guidelines \u00a0for how or where to\u00a0note the original source. In addition, some editorials \u00a0might include extracts from articles published in other papers.
