\u00a0 The original illustration also omitted Lincoln&#8217;s image at the bottom.\u00a0 Instead the small circled insert featured an abstract image of heavenly intervention breaking a slave&#8217;s chains.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_172\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/emancipation\/files\/2011\/07\/Nastdetail.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-172\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-172\" title=\"Nastdetail\" src=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/emancipation\/files\/2011\/07\/Nastdetail-300x188.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/emancipation\/files\/2011\/07\/Nastdetail-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/emancipation\/files\/2011\/07\/Nastdetail.jpg 882w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-172\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Detail from 1863 image<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This slight change in image design between 1863 and 1865 often goes unnoticed in commentary on the piece but nonetheless provides a revealing way to demonstrate Lincoln&#8217;s apotheosis from sometimes-maligned president into a national martyr and revered Great Emancipator.\u00a0 Special thanks to teacher Rebecca Maxfield from Bountiful, Utah for pointing this out.<\/p>\n<p>Lincoln actually met Nast in December 1864 at the urging of George William Curtis, political editor of <em>Harper&#8217;s Weekly. <\/em>You can read Curtis&#8217;s letter of introduction, informing Lincoln that &#8220;You and the country have no more faithful friend than Mr. Nast,&#8221;
