{"id":109,"date":"2011-07-09T15:49:29","date_gmt":"2011-07-09T15:49:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/emancipation\/?p=109"},"modified":"2011-07-09T15:51:21","modified_gmt":"2011-07-09T15:51:21","slug":"harpers-ferry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/emancipation\/2011\/07\/09\/harpers-ferry\/","title":{"rendered":"Harpers Ferry"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_110\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/fieldtrips\/harpers.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-110\" class=\"size-full wp-image-110\" title=\"enginestamp\" src=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/emancipation\/files\/2011\/07\/enginestamp.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"233\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-110\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Harpers Ferry engine house (3D model)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>John Brown&#8217;s raid at Harpers Ferry in October 1859 was a critical event in the history of emancipation.\u00a0 Brown might have been the most determined emancipator in America during the years before the Civil War.\u00a0 His audacious plan to seize weapons from a federal arsenal and lead southern slaves to freedom along the Appalachian mountains was aggressive enough to scare away even some longtime friends and supporters such as Frederick Douglass.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/hafe\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Harpers Ferry National Historical Park <\/a>near Charles Town, West Virginia contains several historic sites (both restored and preserved) for visitors to experience. \u00a0 The most significant might be the engine house or John Brown&#8217;s Fort which served as the location where Brown and some of his men holed up at the end the raid with their hostages.\u00a0 The storming of the engine house (by federal troops under the command of Col. Robert E.
