After breaking into a house in Carlisle, the two men were arrested. Local authorities also placed the fugitive slaves in custody. The Pennsylvania legislature, however, passed a law in early March 1847 that made it illegal for state officials to help anyone trying to catch fugitive slaves. After Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/6207\" target=\"_blank\">John McClintock<\/a> told Judge <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/5878\" target=\"_blank\">Samuel Hepburn<\/a> about the new law, Hepburn \u201cpronounced them illegally in custody.\u201d A riot occurred as the fugitive slaves left the courthouse. While two \u00a0fugitive \u00a0slaves escaped, \u00a0one was forced to return to Maryland. <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/27575\" target=\"_blank\">Professor McClintock denied<\/a> that he was responsible for what happened:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">&#8220;All that I did was to try to do my duty to the laws of the land.
