{"id":163,"date":"2010-07-30T09:38:17","date_gmt":"2010-07-30T13:38:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/cwblog\/?p=163"},"modified":"2010-07-30T09:47:24","modified_gmt":"2010-07-30T13:47:24","slug":"the-colwell-family","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/cwblog\/2010\/07\/30\/the-colwell-family\/","title":{"rendered":"The Colwell Family"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/cwblog\/files\/2010\/07\/8-Colwell-House.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-164\" src=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/cwblog\/files\/2010\/07\/8-Colwell-House-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/cwblog\/files\/2010\/07\/8-Colwell-House-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/cwblog\/files\/2010\/07\/8-Colwell-House-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Colwells are important to <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/9312\" target=\"_blank\">Carlisle<\/a>\u2019s Civil War history.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/32797\" target=\"_blank\">James Colwell <\/a>joined the Carlisle Fencibles, one of the military units formed in 1861, and was elected as First Lieutenant, despite being the oldest soldier at age 48.\u00a0 Shortly after leaving home, he wrote to his wife <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/32798\" target=\"_blank\">Annie<\/a> to explain his motives for enlisting, saying, \u201cI did it from a sense of right and duty\u2026[M]y dear wife, the North is right and the South wrong\u2026[P]osterity and the whole civilized world will so decide.\u00a0 Of this I have no doubt.\u201d<a href=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/cwblog\/wp-admin\/post-new.php#_edn1\">[i]<\/a>\u00a0 Although Annie, a southerner from <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/11856\" target=\"_blank\">Baltimore<\/a>, was not happy with his decision to join the army because it left her at home with four young children, she supported her husband and often sent him packages containing chicken, butter, jelly, and whiskey while he was away.\u00a0 Unfortunately, James was killed at <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/32776\" target=\"_blank\">Antietam<\/a> in 1862.\u00a0 The couple\u2019s nearly two hundred letters from the war were compiled by their great-grandson David Colwell into a book entitled <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Bitter-Fruits-Civil-Comes-Small\/dp\/0963892363\" target=\"_blank\">The Bitter Fruits<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The Colwell family&#8217;s house can be seen today at 145 South Pitt Street in Carlisle, PA.<\/p>\n<hr size=\"1\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/cwblog\/wp-admin\/post-new.php#_ednref1\">[i]<\/a> David G.
