{"id":425,"date":"2010-11-01T08:08:08","date_gmt":"2010-11-01T15:08:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cumberlandcivilwar.com\/?p=422"},"modified":"2010-11-01T08:08:08","modified_gmt":"2010-11-01T15:08:08","slug":"election-of-1860-carlisle-american-volunteer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/cumberland150\/election-of-1860-carlisle-american-volunteer\/","title":{"rendered":"Election of 1860 &#8211; Carlisle American Volunteer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/9604\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-423 alignright\" title=\"Lincoln\" src=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/cumberland150\/files\/2010\/11\/HD_Lincolnflag1860-300x208.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"208\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When Democrats held a rally in <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/9312\" target=\"_blank\">Carlisle<\/a>, Pennsylvania on October 6, 1860, the Carlisle (PA) <em>American Volunteer<\/em> reported that no one had been ready for the \u201coverwhelming avalanche\u201d of delegates from \u201cevery town and township in the county.\u201d Over 8,000 people filled the streets before noon, according to some estimates. The <em>American Volunteer <\/em>backed Senator <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/5585\" target=\"_blank\">Stephen Douglas<\/a> and supported this event as a means to rally Democratic voters before a <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/9604\" target=\"_blank\">critical election<\/a>. In the months before the election, the <em>American Volunteer<\/em> tried to convince <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/9346\" target=\"_blank\">Cumberland County<\/a> residents that the <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/9596\" target=\"_blank\">Republican party<\/a> represented a serious threat. \u201cThe election of <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/6095\" target=\"_blank\">LINCOLN <\/a>will be the death-knell to our Republic,\u201d as the <em>American Volunteer<\/em> warned. As Republican \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/33173\" target=\"_blank\">Wide Awake<\/a>\u201d groups held <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/34142\" target=\"_blank\">parades <\/a>in northern cities, the  <em>American Volunteer<\/em> reported that \u201ceach man carried a six-barreled revolver\u201d in order to demonstrate that \u201cLINCOLN and his party are determined to carry out their sectional doctrines at all hazards and at any sacrifice.\u201d\u00a0The <em>American Volunteer<\/em> saw Republicans as a \u201csectional Abolition party\u201d which was determined to \u201chumble the South [and] root out slavery.\u201d If Republicans carried out their plan, the <em>American Volunteer<\/em> predicted that \u201cevery State in the Union will be bathed in blood.\u201d\u00a0Only a Democratic victory in November 1860 would ensure a future for the Union.
