On April 21, the officers were chosen with Captain <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/5873\" target=\"_blank\">Robert M. Henderson<\/a>, in charge of Company A of the 36th Regiment, 7th Pennsylvania Reserve Corps. Henderson was assisted in command by First Lieutenant <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/32797\" target=\"_blank\">James S. Colwell<\/a>, Second Lieutenant Erkuries Beatty, and First Sergeant John D. Adair. These men received the nickname \u201cCarlisle Fencibles\u201d in part because most of its members belonged to a gymnastic club and because a \u201cfencible\u201d is a defender of a country. The company spent a two month period of relative inactivity marching and drilling until the soldiers left for Camp Wayne in <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/18419\" target=\"_blank\">West Chester<\/a>, Pennsylvania on June 6. Before the men departed they received a satin flag from Mrs. Samuel Alexander, a granddaughter of Ephraim Blaine, that, according to David G. Colwell,\u00a0had the inscription \u201cMay God defend the right!\u201d\u00a0 The 7th Pennsylvania Reserves went on to fight in the Battles of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/rich\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Gaines\u2019 Mill<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/mana\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Bull Run<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/anti\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Antietam<\/a> while suffering great losses. The wartime experience of one member of the Carlisle Fencibles, <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/5511\" target=\"_blank\">John Taylor Cuddy<\/a>, is chronicled through letters he sent home to his family in Carlisle.
