{"id":493,"date":"2012-08-02T18:36:01","date_gmt":"2012-08-02T18:36:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-gilder\/?p=493"},"modified":"2013-07-10T15:34:30","modified_gmt":"2013-07-10T15:34:30","slug":"mind-maps-of-the-civil-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/civilwar\/2012\/08\/02\/mind-maps-of-the-civil-war\/","title":{"rendered":"Mind Maps of the Civil War"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/civilwar\/files\/2012\/08\/mind-map.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-495\" alt=\"Civil War Mind Map\" src=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/civilwar\/files\/2012\/08\/mind-map.jpg\" width=\"384\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/civilwar\/files\/2012\/08\/mind-map.jpg 384w, https:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/civilwar\/files\/2012\/08\/mind-map-274x300.jpg 274w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 384px) 100vw, 384px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Earlier today Matt mentioned the use of note taking in picture form (sorry I can&#8217;t remember exactly how it was stated).\u00a0 However, it immediately reminded me of Concept maps and Mind Mapping.\u00a0\u00a0Concept maps tend to be\u00a0boring and dull to my students\u00a0and I agree with them on that issue.\u00a0 Simple bubble maps with words connected to other words to show a list of information in a\u00a0graphic form.\u00a0 Blah!\u00a0 Mind Mapping however is much more pleasing to the eye, can be colorful, may include words and pictures, but is best seen as a tool a student can make\u00a0to use for their own understanding of a central topic.\u00a0 These are very\u00a0similar to word clouds where it focuses on the big ideas but should be expanded down to minor sub-topics.\u00a0Most of the time students hand create these.\u00a0 Above I have put together (created mine in MSWord, roughly I might add) the\u00a0Virginia Department of Education&#8217;s\u00a0state objectives for teaching the Civil War.\u00a0 Even if you do not teach in VA, I&#8217;m willing to bet you could figure out the topics to be taught based on the diagram.\u00a0 My central image is that of the United States as a clue that whatever this is, it happened here.\u00a0 If you begin in the upper right hand corner with the words &#8220;north and south&#8221; and work around the map clockwise\u00a0it will directly follow the objectives.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">A Nation Divided &#8211; North vs. South<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">Virginia once included West Virginia<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>Battles (in VA)<\/li>\n<li>People involved:\u00a0 whites, enslaved, free, and American Indians<\/li>\n<li>Reconstruction<\/li>\n<li>Jim Crow laws<\/li>\n<li>Change in economy through &#8211; railroads, industry and growth of cities<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I have used Mind Maps as both a pre-assessment and a final (summative) assesments.\u00a0 Simply by giving students the central topic they are to then show what they know in picture and\/or words.\u00a0 After pre-assessing students, I would share\u00a0the unit overview in Mind Map form where I actually draw on the Promethean Board as I outline the unit.\u00a0 Students can draw in their notes and add their own comments to help them remember.\u00a0 We would then proceed to take each sub-topic and expand further into the study.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve found by teaching this way students are first given an outline that is easily understood by the elementary student and secondly keeps me from leaving my objectives!\u00a0The Civil War is one of those areas that a teacher could spend an entire year on and still not scratch the surface if they weren&#8217;t careful.\u00a0 I appreciate each time Matt points out the &#8220;best part to include&#8221;
