{"id":276,"date":"2012-08-01T16:52:02","date_gmt":"2012-08-01T16:52:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-gilder\/?p=276"},"modified":"2012-08-01T16:52:02","modified_gmt":"2012-08-01T16:52:02","slug":"using-wordle-or-tagxedo-in-the-classroom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/civilwar\/2012\/08\/01\/using-wordle-or-tagxedo-in-the-classroom\/","title":{"rendered":"Using Wordle or Tagxedo in the classroom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I cannot wait to use this in my classroom. \u00a0I think this would be a great anticipatory set for students to be introduced to any documents especially primary source documents. \u00a0In teaching middle school, students struggle with the language, the vocabulary and the word clouds will definitely help students to identify the BIG WORDS.<\/p>\n<p>The first document I tried was the Emancipation Proclamation. \u00a0I created two different ones. \u00a0The emancipation proclamation in wordle (click on link-<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wordle.net\/show\/wrdl\/5536217\/Emancipation_Proclamation\">Emancipation proclamation<\/a>). \u00a0The second is from Tagxedo below. \u00a0I really liked Tagxedo because you could play around with shapes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/responsive\/files\/2012\/08\/Emancipation-Proc.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-277\" src=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/responsive\/files\/2012\/08\/Emancipation-Proc-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/civilwar\/files\/2012\/08\/Emancipation-Proc-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/civilwar\/files\/2012\/08\/Emancipation-Proc.jpg 461w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The second document I created was the Gettysburg Address. \u00a0This I also created with Tagxedo in the shape of Lincoln&#8217;s face.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/responsive\/files\/2012\/08\/Gettysburg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-279\" src=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/responsive\/files\/2012\/08\/Gettysburg-207x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"207\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/civilwar\/files\/2012\/08\/Gettysburg-207x300.jpg 207w, https:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/civilwar\/files\/2012\/08\/Gettysburg.jpg 313w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 207px) 100vw, 207px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Even giving this to students as a short writing assignment, before giving student the documents, enables them to work through the document in a more easily accessible way. I plan on using this technique in the following ways.<\/p>\n<p>1. \u00a0Give the students the picture and ask them what they think the document is about in a short 1 paragraph writing assignment.<\/p>\n<p>2. \u00a0Give these as examples and have the students read primary sources and create their own using newspapers\/magazines to cut out words. \u00a0Students should use the KEY words-not necessarily the ones that show up the most to represent the document in a visual way.<\/p>\n<p>3. \u00a0Have the students read the document and then give them the picture and ask them to rework it so it represents the document better.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, in writing this, it reminded me of something I saw in a museum and that was the Preamble written out with the use of license plates. \u00a0These can be very powerful teaching tools. \u00a0One thing is for sure, I would love suggestions on how you would use Tagxedo and Wordle<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I cannot wait to use this in my classroom. \u00a0I think this would be a great anticipatory set for students to be introduced to any documents especially primary source documents. \u00a0In teaching middle school, students struggle with the language, the vocabulary and the word clouds will definitely help students to identify the BIG WORDS.
