I reckon it emboldened and encouraged abolitionists in reverse proportion to the terror it struck in the hearts of those interested in maintaining their \u2018peculiar institution\u2019 &#8211; but perhaps I am missing nuances and\/or other effects?<\/p>\n<p>And beyond slavery, how heavily did global events affect the union preservationists\u2019 thinking? For instance, in McPherson\u2019s For Cause and Country the northern immigrant soldier writes his father in England that preserving the union is important because otherwise the West might decide to break off next and \u201cthis country would be as bad as the German states\u201d. What other global events were impacting North America toward war?<\/p>\n<p>I found a great online discussion published in last September\u2019s Journal of American History that treats the last of these questions; looking at nation building and nationalism globally at the time of the Civil War. I recommend a glance if you are remotely interested.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/viewer?url=http%3A%2F%2Fscholar.harvard.edu%2Farmitage%2Ffiles%2F455.full_4.pdf\">Interchange: Nationalism and Internationalism in the Era of the Civil War<\/a><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" alt=\"http:\/\/www.creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-sa\/3.0\" src=\"https:\/\/dmslibrary1.wikispaces.com\/file\/view\/WorldSocialNetworkingBanMap.jpg\/338423952\/479x288\/WorldSocialNetworkingBanMap.jpg\" width=\"312\" height=\"207\" \/><br \/>\nThinking about the UGRR as a resistance movement is very helpful to my own understanding &#8211; I found myself thinking of similarities to the resistance movements across Occupied Europe during WWII.
