Of the eleven diaries that are available, <a href=\"http:\/\/digital.lib.uiowa.edu\/cdm4\/results.php?CISOOP1=all&amp;CISOBOX1=186*&amp;CISOFIELD1=title&amp;CISOOP2=exact&amp;CISOBOX2=&amp;CISOFIELD2=creato&amp;CISOOP3=any&amp;CISOBOX3=&amp;CISOFIELD3=publis&amp;CISOOP4=none&amp;CISOBOX4=&amp;CISOFIELD4=transc&amp;CISOROOT=\/diaries&amp;t=s\" target=\"_blank\">three were written <\/a>between 1860 and 1870. Even though they are relatively short (only a few pages have been digitized in some cases), the diaries can still provide interesting insights into the children\u2019s experiences. One entry suggests that at least some children were paying attention to the important political issues of their day \u2013 Ellery Hancock, who was only about ten years old in 1860, <a href=\"http:\/\/digital.lib.uiowa.edu\/u?\/diaries,114\" target=\"_blank\">noted on November 6<\/a> that Abraham Lincoln had been \u201celected.\u201d One can learn more about the author through the short biographical sketch on the \u201cdocument description\u201d page in each diary.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Iowa has a small but interesting digital collection of diaries from children who lived in Iowa from 1860 to the 1900s.
