Newspapers and books, such as the New York <em>Tribune<\/em> and Hinton Rowan Helper&#8217;s <em>The Impending Crisis of the South<\/em> (1857), were not always distributed in southern states.The Chicago <em>Press and Tribune<\/em>, which supported the Republican party, was one of many northern papers that published specific examples. One <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/30805\" target=\"_blank\">article from January 1860 <\/a>is particularly interesting since it described an incident in Delaware, a slave state. The Millord <em>News and Advertiser<\/em> had complained that their local \u201cPostmaster [had] refused to distribute\u201d the paper. While \u201c[it was] a journal of moderate free State sentiments,\u201d the Chicago <em>Tribune<\/em> explained that that paper \u201cin no respect\u2026countenance any other than legal and constitutional measures for the gradual removal of slavery from its own State.\u201d Yet apparently even that stance was enough for a ban. When \u201cour boasted free government [was]\u2026 in the hands of\u201d Democrats, the <em>Tribune<\/em> concluded that it was \u201cnot less a despotism than the most absolute government of Europe.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The United States Post Office had an important role in suppressing antislavery material in slave states before the Civil War.
