The site is organized around several themes, such as \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/exhibits\/british\/brit-1.html\" target=\"_blank\">Exploration and Settlement<\/a>,\u201d \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/exhibits\/british\/brit-6.html\" target=\"_blank\">Common Language, Separate Voices<\/a>,\u201d \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/exhibits\/british\/brit-4.html\" target=\"_blank\">From Abolition to Equal Rights<\/a>,\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/exhibits\/british\/brit-7.html\" target=\"_blank\">Popular Culture: from Baseball to Rock and Roll<\/a>.\u201d The material related to the Civil War is spread out among these groups. Some particularly interesting items in this exhibit are a satire on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/exhibits\/british\/brit-1.html\" target=\"_blank\">the California Gold Rush <\/a>(<em>A Goodnatured Hint about California<\/em> (London, 1849)), a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/exhibits\/british\/images\/vc67.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">political cartoon <\/a>on Confederate diplomats\u2019 failure to win recognition as an independent country from the United Kingdom, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/exhibits\/british\/brit-3.html\" target=\"_blank\">a letter from Queen Victoria to Mary Lincoln <\/a>after President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cJohn Bull &amp; Uncle Sam: Four Centuries of British-American Relations\u201d is an interesting exhibit of selected items from the British Library in London and the Library of Congress in Washington DC.
