Shedd&#8217;s detailed letters provide a unique glimpse of military life at sub-tropical outposts in Key West, Fort Jefferson, and St. Augustine.<\/p>\n<p>Images as well as annotated footnotes help to create an immersive digital experience.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/scholar.library.miami.edu\/shedd\/letters\/roster7.html#page2\" target=\"_blank\">Names mentioned<\/a> by Shedd are cross-listed with all 54 of his letters\u00a0 dating 1861-1869. The University also utilizes an extensive array of secondary sources to provide detailed, era-specific descriptions of <a href=\"http:\/\/scholar.library.miami.edu\/shedd\/letters\/condenser.html\" target=\"_blank\">various vocabulary<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/scholar.library.miami.edu\/shedd\/letters\/nonews.html\" target=\"_blank\">phrases<\/a> quoted by Shedd in his letters.<\/p>\n<p>Primary sources are also linked within the letters as Shedd mentions them, such as his 1861 <a href=\"http:\/\/scholar.library.miami.edu\/shedd\/letters\/enlistment.html\" target=\"_blank\">enlistment papers<\/a> and 1862\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/scholar.library.miami.edu\/shedd\/letters\/promot.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">promotion<\/a> to 2nd lieutenant.
