The site offers lots of information, but the best are the transcripts and images from publications such as <em>Frank Leslie&#8217;s Illustrated Newspaper<\/em>. Newspapers provided readers in 1858 with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.atlantic-cable.com\/Article\/1858Leslies\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">detailed accounts <\/a>on the progress of the cable\u2019s construction and the <a href=\"http:\/\/atlantic-cable.com\/1858NY\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">celebrations that took place <\/a>in cities after the first official message was sent. \u201cWherever the news penetrated there was a public jubilee\u201d and, <a href=\"http:\/\/atlantic-cable.com\/1858NY\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">according <\/a>to the <em>Illustrated London News<\/em>, \u201cthe most thorough and systematic display of popular joy took place\u201d in New York City.
