Yet when this committee released its findings in the summer of 1860, many regarded its efforts as ineffective. \u201cSupporters of both sides were\u2026heavily armed\u201d in the visitor galleries of Congress and, as historian David Reynolds explains, \u201cthe Mason Committee knew it had to handle the Harpers Ferry matter with kid gloves.\u201d House Divided has some material available on this committee, including an editorial <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/29972\" target=\"_blank\">originally published in the Ohio State Journal<\/a>.
