This development alarmed President John Buchanan, as <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/29583\" target=\"_blank\">a letter from August 1860 <\/a>reveals. If \u201ca re-union between the\u201d northern and southern Democrats did not occur, Buchanan told editor Gerard Hallock that \u201cthe Constitution &amp; the union cannot be perpetuated.\u201d Yet the split in the party was not a simple North\/South divide. While Hallock\u2019s New York <em>Journal of Commerce<\/em> had provided able &amp; valuable support\u2026to [Buchanan\u2019s] administration,\u201d other northern Democrats were not as loyal.
