The collection offers detailed descriptions of a variety of topics such as Union General <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/1870\" target=\"_blank\">William Tecumseh Sherman&#8217;s<\/a> successful <a href=\"\/\/hdl.loc.gov\/loc.gmd\/g3921s.cw0133000\" target=\"_blank\">Atlanta Campaign<\/a> to an outline of 23 forts defending the Confederate<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-660\" src=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/blogdivided\/files\/2009\/10\/civilwar_map2.jpg\" alt=\"civilwar_map2\" width=\"235\" height=\"175\" \/> capital of <a href=\"\/\/hdl.loc.gov\/loc.ndlpcoop\/gvhs01.vhs00052\" target=\"_blank\">Richmond<\/a>, Virginia. Another great tool within the database is the fact that each map contains a list of subject links that help to expand upon your research. The collection contains map collections originally owned by both Union and Confederate military authorities.<\/p>\n<p>American Memory has other databases that can prove useful in your research. Civil War <a href=\"http:\/\/memory.loc.gov\/ammem\/gmdhtml\/rrhtml\/rrhome.html\" target=\"_blank\">railroad maps<\/a> show an intricate description of the development of railroads through 1900.\u00a0 There is also a collection of <a href=\"http:\/\/memory.loc.gov\/ammem\/cwphtml\/cwphome.html\" target=\"_blank\">over 1,000 photographs<\/a> from the Civil War era that have been specifically selected due to their innate detail.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Library of Congress&#8217; American Memory has constructed an interactive database containing over 3,000 maps from the Civil War era.
