{"id":4487,"date":"2013-10-05T07:16:00","date_gmt":"2013-10-05T12:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/blogdivided\/?p=4487"},"modified":"2013-10-05T15:05:00","modified_gmt":"2013-10-05T20:05:00","slug":"introducing-what-would-lincoln-do","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/blogdivided\/2013\/10\/05\/introducing-what-would-lincoln-do\/","title":{"rendered":"Introducing &#8220;What Would Lincoln Do?&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/blogdivided\/files\/2013\/10\/Panel1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4491\" alt=\"Panel\" src=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/blogdivided\/files\/2013\/10\/Panel1.jpg\" width=\"580\" height=\"139\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I am moderating a special panel at Ford&#8217;s Theatre on Tuesday, October 15, 2013 from 12:30pm to 1:30pm on the always relevant topic of &#8220;What Would Lincoln Do? \u00a0Understanding How Lincoln Gets Used (And Abused) in Today&#8217;s Washington.&#8221; \u00a0This is part of\u00a0the closing phase of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/new.livestream.com\/gilderlehrman\/lincoln\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Understanding Lincoln&#8221; online course<\/a>\u00a0(which the House Divided Project produces with the <a href=\"http:\/\/gilderlehrman.org\" target=\"_blank\">Gilder Lehrman Institute<\/a>) but it is open to anybody who wants to attend in person or watch later on Vimeo or C-SPAN. \u00a0You can find out all of the details &#8211;and reserve seats- <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fords.org\/event\/what-would-lincoln-do\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>, but this post (the first in a series about the event) is designed to\u00a0more fully introduce our notable panel of experts and provide some easy access to their published opinions on these matters.<\/p>\n<p>First, however, we should dispense with this shutdown business. \u00a0Ford&#8217;s Theatre is closed as long as the shutdown lasts, but our panel will continue regardless. \u00a0Ford&#8217;s Theatre has a new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fords.org\/home\/plan-your-visit\/daytime-visits-fords-theatre\/center-education-and-leadership\" target=\"_blank\">Center for Education &amp; Leadership <\/a>which is just across the street and which remains open to visitors. \u00a0We can always relocate there on October 15 if the crisis does not get resolved.<\/p>\n<p>Our panel is a truly remarkable collection of figures who combine both expert knowledge of Abraham Lincoln with shrewd understanding of modern-day Washington and policy-making. \u00a0They include:<\/p>\n<p>*\u00a0<b>Michael Lind<\/b>, Policy Director, Economic Growth Program, New America Foundation and author <em>What Lincoln Believed<\/em> (2006)<br \/>\n*\u00a0<b>Richard Norton Smith<\/b>, noted presidential historian, George Mason University and former founding director, Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum<br \/>\n*\u00a0<b>Craig Symonds<\/b>, Emeritus Professor of History, U.S. Naval Academy and Lincoln Prize-winning author, <em>Lincoln and His Admirals<\/em> (2008)<br \/>\n*\u00a0<b>James L. Swanson<\/b>, Senior Scholar, Heritage Foundation and best-selling author, Manhunt (2006)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/newamerica.net\/user\/91\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-Iod5OSFxMV8\/T9UXcgO9idI\/AAAAAAAAAss\/-w5s4whcz18\/s1600\/michael_lind280x350.jpg\" width=\"168\" height=\"210\" \/>Michael Lind<\/a>\u00a0was one of the co-founders of the New America Foundation, a leading Washington DC think tank, which is co-sponsoring this event. \u00a0His current policy focus is on economic growth, but he has authored several thought-provoking books on American political history, including an engaging study of Abraham Lincoln entitled,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=VkZNFlZAZ3UC&amp;lpg=PP1&amp;dq=michael%20lind%20what%20lincoln%20believed&amp;pg=PP1#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\"><em>What Lincoln Believed: The Values and Convictions of America&#8217;s Greatest President\u00a0<\/em><\/a>(Doubleday, 2005). \u00a0 In this work, which the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/05\/22\/books\/review\/22MALCOMS.html?pagewanted=all&amp;_r=0\" target=\"_blank\"><em>New York Times\u00a0<\/em><\/a>called &#8220;intellectually bold&#8221; and one that &#8220;will almost certainly change the way you think about America and one of its greatest presidents,&#8221; Lind argues that Lincoln&#8217;s core conviction was democratic self-government and that he should be known first and foremost as, &#8220;the Great Democrat.&#8221; \u00a0Over the years, Lind has produced numerous books that invoke Lincoln&#8217;s legacy, but for the purposes of this panel, one of the most relevant was a short piece he authored for\u00a0<em>Salon\u00a0<\/em>in 2009, under the headline, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2009\/02\/12\/lincoln_bicentennial\/\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;How would Lincoln vote today?&#8221;<\/a>, which promised to reveal &#8220;where Lincoln really stood on the issues.&#8221; \u00a0The bottom line of this eminently readable (and thoroughly debatable) piece is Lind&#8217;s assertion that Lincoln &#8220;might find himself more at home among Democrats focused on technology and economic growth&#8221; (um, like folks at the New America Foundation, perhaps?) and that most emphatically, &#8220;Nobody with Lincoln\u2019s religious and political beliefs could be a conservative Republican&#8221; today.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/hauensteincenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/120116_nortonsmith_sotu_328.jpg\" width=\"363\" height=\"197\" \/>Richard Norton Smith might beg to disagree. \u00a0Smith is one of the nation&#8217;s most prominent presidential historians. Currently a history faculty member at <a href=\"http:\/\/historyarthistory.gmu.edu\/people\/rsmit2\" target=\"_blank\">George Mason University<\/a>\u00a0and completing a biography of Nelson Rockefeller, he has been a fixture over the years on C-SPAN and PBS &#8220;Newshour,&#8221; and a widely read political biographer of diverse figures such as Thomas Dewey, Herbert Hoover, Robert McCormick and George Washington. \u00a0He is also far more reluctant than Lind to identify Lincoln with either modern-day political party. \u00a0 \u00a0Smith told PBS in 2012 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/bb\/politics\/jan-june12\/lincoln_02-20.html\" target=\"_blank\">during this virtual tour of the new Ford&#8217;s Theatre Center<\/a>, that &#8220;everyone wants Lincoln on their side. Almost everyone can devise a rationale to justify that.&#8221; \u00a0As a former director of several presidential libraries (including the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alplm.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library &amp; Museum<\/a> in Springfield), Smith has a uniquely rich view of how American presidents, in particular, are always &#8220;getting right with Lincoln&#8221; (a famous line that Smith often quotes from David Donald&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/past\/docs\/issues\/95nov\/lincoln\/lincrite.htm\" target=\"_blank\">well-regarded 1956 essay<\/a>\u00a0in <em>The Atlantic<\/em>). \u00a0Yet even the prudent historian sometimes finds himself invoking Lincoln or other Rushmore figures to comment on present-day political trends. \u00a0Just last week, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/blogs\/itsallpolitics\/2013\/09\/28\/226824471\/in-washingtons-fiscal-tango-obamas-lacking-a-dance-partner\" target=\"_blank\">Smith offered NPR<\/a> a subtle critique of President Obama&#8217;s handling of the shutdown \/ debt ceiling crisis by comparing him to &#8220;successful presidents&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Successful presidents are defined in part by their enemies, [For] Andrew Jackson, it was the Bank of the United States. [Theodore Roosevelt], it was the &#8216;malefactors of wealth.&#8217; Ronald Reagan, it was the &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.reaganfoundation.org\/bw_detail.aspx?p=LMB4YGHF2&amp;h1=0&amp;h2=0&amp;sw=&amp;lm=berlinwall&amp;args_a=cms&amp;args_b=74&amp;argsb=N&amp;tx=1770\" target=\"_blank\">evil empire<\/a>.&#8217; This president \u2014 it isn&#8217;t that he has lacked for enemies. But I think he&#8217;s been very reluctant to &#8230; play that game.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/news.fullerton.edu\/2013sp\/images\/Symonds-200.jpg\" width=\"120\" height=\"148\" \/>Like Richard Norton Smith,\u00a0Craig Symonds tries to embody the classic scholarly caution about applying the past the to the present. \u00a0Symonds taught for years in the History Department at the US Naval Academy. \u00a0In fact, Symonds was the guy whom Harrison Ford &#8220;shadowed&#8221; in 1991 while he was studying up for his role as professor \/ spy Jack Ryan in the &#8220;The Patriot Games.&#8221; \u00a0Symonds has authored or edited more than 20 history books, mostly on the Civil War or US naval history. \u00a0He won the 2009 Lincoln Prize for his book, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=cnq4UO9YD5IC&amp;lpg=PP1&amp;dq=lincoln%20and%20his%20admirals&amp;pg=PP1#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\">Lincoln and His Admirals<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(Oxford, 2008). Yet even Professor Emeritus Symonds occasionally indulges in the inevitable &#8220;getting right with Lincoln&#8221; parlor game. When asked about leadership lessons that might be derived from Lincoln, Symonds responded pointedly\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/lincolninstitute.wordpress.com\/2013\/10\/02\/a-conversation-with-craig-symonds\/\" target=\"_blank\">during a recent interview <\/a>with the Abraham Lincoln Institute at Lincoln Memorial University, that he could name three: \u00a0&#8220;patience; a willingness to listen, as well as talk; and a sense of humor.\u00a0 Sadly, all three are sorely in need in our nation today.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" alt=\"\"
