The  <em>Herald<\/em>, as Buchanan <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/25555\" target=\"_blank\">explained<\/a>, had provided \u201cable &amp; powerful support\u2026almost universally throughout my stormy and turbulent administration.\u201d Yet overall Buchanan saw his administration as \u00a0a success. \u201cUnder Heaven&#8217;s blessing the administration has been eminently successful in its foreign &amp; domestic policy,\u201d Buchanan <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/25555\" target=\"_blank\">noted<\/a>. As for \u201cthe sad events which have recently occurred\u201d during the secession crisis, Buchanan argued that \u201cno human wisdom could have prevented\u201d them. While \u201cI feel conscious that I have done my duty,\u201d Buchanan acknowledged that it \u201cwill be for the public &amp; posterity to judge\u201d if he had provided \u201cwise &amp; peaceful direction towards the preservation or reconstruction of the union.\u201d After the Civil War, Buchanan continued to defend his administration&#8217;s policies in <em><a href=\"http:\/\/deila.dickinson.edu\/theirownwords\/title\/0010.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Mr. Buchanan&#8217;s Administration on the Eve of the Rebellion<\/a><\/em> (1866).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One hundred fifty years ago today James Buchanan was at his home in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and wrote a letter to New York Herald editor James Gordon Bennett in which he reflected on his administration.
