The 150th anniversary of President-Elect Lincoln<\/a>‘s tense arrival in Washington has provoked several evocative blog posts.<\/p>\n

Ted Widmer<\/a>, director of the John Carter Brown Library at Brown University, provides a comprehensive decscription about Lincoln\u2019s travels for the “Disunion” blog at the New York Times<\/em>. Through several\u00a0posts (see especially 2\/10<\/a>,\u00a02\/21<\/a> and 2\/22<\/a>)\u00a0Widmer traces the route from Springfield to Washington and illustrates the ups and downs of the emotional journey. Though Lincoln never wrote about this trip, his secretary John Nicolay<\/a> conveyed the following:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is hard for anyone who had not had the chance of personal observation to realize the mingled excitement and apprehension, elation and fatigue which Mr. Lincoln\u2026 underwent\u2026 during this memorable trip from Springfield to Washington.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Historian Harold Holzer also authored a vivid\u00a0post<\/a> for\u00a0“Disunion” on the anniversary of the President-Elect\u2019s arrival in Washington. Holzer gathers inspiration from the close parallels between Lincoln\u2019s trip and President Obama\u2019s recent pre-inaugural journey. However, he says, \u201cMost Americans overlooked a critical historical irony.\u201d President-elect Obama enjoyed record-breaking crowds on the way to his inauguration while president-elect Lincoln was met by a single friend. \u201cLincoln made the final leg of his journey in total secrecy,\u201d Holzer writes, \u201cin the dead of night, disguised to avoid detection and at one point sleeping near a woman who was not his wife.\u201d<\/p>\n
