Through several\u00a0posts (see especially <a href=\"http:\/\/opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com\/2011\/02\/10\/farewell-to-springfield\/\" target=\"_blank\">2\/10<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com\/2011\/02\/21\/all-or-nothing\/\" target=\"_blank\">2\/21<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com\/2011\/02\/22\/nuts\/\" target=\"_blank\">2\/22<\/a>)\u00a0Widmer traces the route from Springfield to Washington and illustrates the ups and downs of the emotional journey. Though Lincoln never wrote about this trip, his secretary <a title=\"John Nicolay\" href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/6317\" target=\"_blank\">John Nicolay<\/a> conveyed the following:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is hard for anyone who had not had the chance of personal observation to realize the mingled excitement and apprehension, elation and fatigue which Mr. Lincoln\u2026 underwent\u2026 during this memorable trip from Springfield to Washington.\u201d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Historian Harold Holzer also authored a vivid\u00a0<a title=\"article\" href=\"http:\/\/opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com\/2011\/02\/22\/like-a-thief-in-the-night\/\" target=\"_blank\">post<\/a> for\u00a0&#8220;Disunion&#8221; on the anniversary of the President-Elect\u2019s arrival in Washington. Holzer gathers inspiration from the close parallels between Lincoln\u2019s trip and President Obama\u2019s recent pre-inaugural journey.
