Lincoln had left his home in Springfield, Illinois on <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/35631\" target=\"_blank\">February 11<\/a> for Washington DC. On the way he stopped at a number of cities, including <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/35658\" target=\"_blank\">Albany<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/35656\" target=\"_blank\">Cleveland<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/35633\" target=\"_blank\">Columbus<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/35632\" target=\"_blank\">Indianapolis<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/35636\" target=\"_blank\">Pittsburgh<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/35669\" target=\"_blank\">Philadelphia<\/a>. While Lincoln arrived in <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/11864\" target=\"_blank\">New York City<\/a> with <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/main\/index.phpnode\/6096\" target=\"_blank\">his wife<\/a> on February 19, he did not meet with Mayor Wood until the afternoon of February 20. The Charleston (SC) <em>Mercury<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/34987\" target=\"_blank\">described<\/a> \u201cMayor Wood\u2019s address of welcome to the Abolition President&#8221; as &#8220;too good to be lost.\u201d As Lincoln entered \u201coffice with\u2026 a disconnected and hostile people to reconcile,\u201d Wood told the President-Elect that \u201cit will require a high patriotism and an elevated comprehension of the whole country and its varied interests, opinions and prejudices to so conduct public affairs as to bring it back again to its former harmonious, consolidated and prosperous condition.\u201d In addition, Wood warned that \u201c[New York\u2019s] material interests are paralyzed\u201d and \u201cher commercial greatness is endangered.\u201d Yet Wood also supported southern Democrats and he wanted the crisis to be resolved through compromise. Wood noted that he expected Lincoln to use \u201cpeaceful and conciliatory means\u201d to ensure the \u201crestoration of fraternal relations between the States.\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/quod.lib.umich.edu\/cgi\/t\/text\/text-idx?c=lincoln;cc=lincoln;view=text;idno=lincoln4;rgn=div1;node=lincoln4%3A362\" target=\"_blank\">Lincoln responded<\/a> the same day to Wood\u2019s remarks, noting that \u201cthere is nothing that can ever bring me willingly to consent to the destruction of this Union.\u201d The following day Lincoln <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/35669\" target=\"_blank\">left for Trenton, New Jersey<\/a>.
