While this <a href=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/blogdivided\/2010\/07\/22\/harrisburg-grand-review-november-14-1865\/\" target=\"_blank\">earlier post<\/a> provides an overview, several other newspaper articles offer interesting accounts about the event. \u201cNo day could have been chosen more propitious for the occasion,\u201d as the correspondent for the Philadelphia (PA) <em>Inquirer<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/digitalnewspapers.libraries.psu.edu\/Repository\/getFiles.asp?Style=OliveXLib:LowLevelEntityToSaveGifMSIE_CIVILWAR&amp;Type=text\/html&amp;Locale=english-skin-custom&amp;Path=DEB\/1865\/11\/15&amp;ChunkNum=-1&amp;ID=Ar00200&amp;PageLabel=2\" target=\"_blank\">observed <\/a>that November 14 was \u201cone of the finest of this most pleasant Indian summer.\u201d After <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/924\" target=\"_blank\">Simon Cameron<\/a> delivered a speech, letters from those who could not attend were read aloud. General <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/12201\" target=\"_blank\">Benjamin F. Butler<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/34634\" target=\"_blank\">explained<\/a> that he had \u201cwitnessed\u2026[African American soldiers\u2019] bravery and good conduct on the battle-field, and, above all, their devotion and unswerving loyalty to the flag and government.\u201d Even \u201cwhen their offers of service in the beginning of the way were rejected with contumely,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/6635\" target=\"_blank\">George L. Stearns<\/a> noted that they still \u201cpromptly volunteered at the call of their country when she needed them to help conquer a relentless foe.\u201d Others used the event to argue for equal rights. \u201cAll constitutional privileges, all laws, all ordinances, all regulations of States, discriminating against colored men, must be made null and void,\u201d as Senator <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/6883\" target=\"_blank\">Henry Wilson <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/34639\" target=\"_blank\">proclaimed<\/a>.
