Grant Association at Mississippi State University has <a href=\"http:\/\/library.msstate.edu\/usgrant\/the_papers.asp\" target=\"_blank\">digitized all 31 volumes<\/a> included in the <em>Papers of Ulysses S. Grant<\/em>. This project also offers a <a href=\"http:\/\/library.msstate.edu\/usgrant\/military.asp\" target=\"_blank\">chronology <\/a>and a nice <a href=\"http:\/\/library.msstate.edu\/usgrant\/photos.asp\" target=\"_blank\">collection of images<\/a>. In August 1860 <a href=\"http:\/\/digital.library.msstate.edu\/u?\/USG_volume,15774\" target=\"_blank\">Grant observed<\/a> that \u201cthe Democratic party want a little purifying and nothing will do it so effectually as a defeat.\u201d However, Grant did not want Abraham Lincoln to win in November 1860. \u201cThe only thing is dont like to see a Republican beat the [Democratic] party,\u201d as Grant explained. After Lincoln won the election, Grant could not believe that southern Democrats would accept secession. \u201cIt is hard to realize that a State or States should commit so suicidal an act as to secede from the Union,\u201d as <a href=\"http:\/\/digital.library.msstate.edu\/u?\/USG_volume,15776\" target=\"_blank\">Grant noted<\/a>.
