Sherman<\/a>\u00a0out of Georgia.\u00a0 By December 1, 1864 Union Major\u00a0General <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/6698\" target=\"_blank\">George H. Thomas<\/a>\u00a0and his forces reached Nashville and spent the next two weeks preparing for battle.\u00a0 The fighting began in the morning on December 15 with most of the Union assaults on the Confederates ending successfully.\u00a0 The following day, the Union troops charged the Confederate forces and made them abandon Nashville and retreat across the Tennessee River.\u00a0 The Civil War Preservation Trust\u2019s website offers an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.civilwar.org\/battlefields\/nashville\/nashville-history-articles\/nashvillecooling.html\" target=\"_blank\">article<\/a>: \u201cThe Decisive Battle of Nashville\u201d that provides an overview of the fighting.\u00a0 The website also includes a<a href=\"http:\/\/www.civilwar.org\/battlefields\/nashville\/maps\/nashvillemaps.html\" target=\"_blank\"> map\u00a0<\/a>that depicts troop movements on both sides as well as brief biographies of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.civilwar.org\/education\/history\/biographies\/john-bell-hood.html\" target=\"_blank\">General Hood<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.civilwar.org\/education\/history\/biographies\/george-thomas.html\" target=\"_blank\">General Thomas<\/a>.\u00a0 Also, the Battle of Nashville Preservation Society <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bonps.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">website\u00a0<\/a>offers historic sites and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bonps.org\/old_photos.htm\" target=\"_blank\">photographs<\/a>\u00a0related to the battle. Some other resources that may be useful are the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=q1mTNgfgGncC&amp;dq=george%20h.%20thomas&amp;pg=PA230#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\">Memoir of Major General George H. Thomas<\/a><\/em>\u00a0and John Bell Hood\u2019s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=tC8OAAAAIAAJ&amp;dq=john%20bell%20hood&amp;pg=PA302#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\">Advance and Retreat: Personal Experiences in the United States and Confederate Armies<\/a><\/em>\u00a0which could provide contrasting views from commanding officers in both the Union and Confederate Armies to give different perspectives of the battle.\u00a0 Richard M. McMurry commented on the Battle of Nashville in his <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=YEMF9aBZ6dMC&amp;lpg=PP1&amp;dq=john%20bell%20hood&amp;pg=PA179#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\">book<\/a>:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLate that rainy day, as Hood was conferring with Stewart, the Yankee\u2019s swarmed over Shy\u2019s Hill, annihilating the defenders and sending the remnants of Cheatham\u2019s corps flying off in mad panic.\u00a0 The rout spread to Stewart\u2019s corps.\u00a0 Only Lee\u2019s men preserved a semblance of order, as most of the army dissolved and fled southward in darkness and rain.\u00a0 Hood and other officers tried desperately to rally the fleeing soldiers, but, save for a brave, defiant few who turned to fire at the Federals, their efforts were in vain.\u00a0 Over the fast thawing ground and through sticky mud, the Confederates made their way southward, while Lee strung his corps across the rear of the army to slow the Yankee pursuit.\u00a0 All that night Hood\u2019s men jammed the roads southward from Nashville, abandoning wagons and cannons, throwing away muskets, swords, knapsacks, and camp equipment.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Battle of Nashville took place on December 15-16, 1864 in Davidson County, Tennessee as a part of the Franklin-Nashville Campaign.\u00a0 Beginning in November 1864, Confederate General John Bell Hood\u00a0led the Army of Tennessee towards Nashville in a last attempt to move Union Major General William T.
