Farragut<\/a>\u00a0entered Mobile Bay and came under fire from Confederate forces.\u00a0 Farragut led his forces past the forts and forced Confederate Admiral <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/5251\" target=\"_blank\">Franklin Buchanan<\/a>\u00a0to surrender.\u00a0 On August 23, Fort Morgan was\u00a0the last place to fall and Mobile Bay\u2019s port closed.\u00a0 The Civil War Preservation Trust\u2019s website offers an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.civilwar.org\/battlefields\/mobilebay\/mobile-bay-history-articles\/damn-the-torpedoes-the.html\" target=\"_blank\">article<\/a>, \u201cDamn the Torpedoes: The Battle of Mobile Bay,\u201d which provides a detailed summary of the battle and its commanding officers.\u00a0 The website also includes a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.civilwar.org\/battlefields\/mobilebay\/mobile-bay-maps\/battle-of-mobile-bay.html\" target=\"_blank\">map\u00a0<\/a>that depicts the movement of Union and Confederate forces as well as a list of <a href=\"http:\/\/astore.amazon.com\/civiwarprestr-20?_encoding=UTF8&amp;node=42\" target=\"_blank\">recommended readings<\/a>\u00a0for more information on Mobile Bay.\u00a0 The National Park Service\u2019s website includes a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/nr\/twhp\/wwwlps\/lessons\/73morgan\/73morgan.htm\" target=\"_blank\">lesson plan<\/a> on Fort Morgan and the Battle of Mobile Bay that includes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/nr\/twhp\/wwwlps\/lessons\/73morgan\/73visual2.htm\" target=\"_blank\">images<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/nr\/twhp\/wwwlps\/lessons\/73morgan\/73facts1.htm\" target=\"_blank\">readings<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/nr\/twhp\/wwwlps\/lessons\/73morgan\/73locate1.htm\" target=\"_blank\">maps<\/a>.\u00a0 Foxhall Alexander Parker <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=Vf89B7EpIpkC&amp;ots=H0u16ikjYE&amp;dq=battle%20of%20mobile%20bay&amp;pg=PA29#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\">commented<\/a> on Farragut as he and his forces crossed into Mobile Bay:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs they were passing the Brooklyn, her captain reported \u2018a heavy line of torpedoes across the channel.\u2019 \u2018Damn the torpedoes!\u2019 was the emphatic reply of Farragut. \u2018Jouett, full speed!\u00a0 Four bells, Captain Drayton.\u2019 And the Hartford, as if eager to bear the admiral\u2019s flag to the front, bounded forward \u2018like a thing of life,\u2019 and, increasing her speed at each instant, crossed both lines of torpedoes, going over the ground at the rate of nine miles an hour; for so far had she drifted to the northward and westward while her engines were stopped, as if to make it impossible for the admiral, without heading directly on to Fort Morgan, to obey his own instructions to \u2018pass eastward of the easternmost buoy.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another resource that may be useful is <em><a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=JAoSA2GcE54C&amp;lpg=PP1&amp;dq=battle%20of%20mobile%20bay&amp;pg=PA124#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\">West Wind, Flood Tide: The Battle of Mobile Bay<\/a><\/em>, available as a preview on Google Books, which provides a detailed overview of the Battle of Mobile Bay and its significance during the Civil War.\u00a0 Also available on Google Books is <em><a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=hoCK_yzA8xkC&amp;lpg=PP1&amp;dq=battle%20of%20mobile%20bay&amp;pg=PA245#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\">By Sea and By River: The Naval History of the Civil War<\/a><\/em>\u00a0which includes details on the battle as well as the aftermath and consequences of Mobile Bay.\u00a0 The Civil War Trail\u2019s website has information for those planning on visiting the battle site for a <a href=\"http:\/\/battleofmobilebay.com\/plan_your_visit\/\" target=\"_blank\">field trip <\/a>as well as details on the <a href=\"http:\/\/battleofmobilebay.com\/about_trail\/\" target=\"_blank\">different stops\u00a0<\/a>within the area and <a href=\"http:\/\/battleofmobilebay.com\/historic_sites\/\" target=\"_blank\">historic sites<\/a>\u00a0close by.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Battle of Mobile Bay (also known as the Passing of Forts Morgan and Gaines) took place from August 2-23, 1864 in Mobile\u00a0and Baldwin\u00a0Counties, Alabama.\u00a0 In early August, a large Union fleet under the command of Admiral David G.
