This British newspaper considered the Republican victory in November 1860 as such an important moment in large part because the pro-slavery \u201cSouthern party\u201d had finally been defeated. \u201cThe tide [had]&#8230; turned\u201d and, as the <em>Economist<\/em> argued, it marked \u201cthe commencement of a permanent and sustained movement\u201d against slavery in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Also be sure to read this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/research\/articlesBySubject\/displaystory.cfm?story_id=13092930\" target=\"_blank\">editorial <\/a>on Lincoln\u2019s assassination.
