{"id":2741,"date":"2010-07-12T11:14:46","date_gmt":"2010-07-12T16:14:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/blogdivided\/?p=2741"},"modified":"2010-07-13T10:56:08","modified_gmt":"2010-07-13T15:56:08","slug":"battle-of-chattanooga-november-23-25-1863","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/blogdivided\/2010\/07\/12\/battle-of-chattanooga-november-23-25-1863\/","title":{"rendered":"Battle of Chattanooga: November 23-25, 1863"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/33441\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2755\" style=\"margin: 10px\" src=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/blogdivided\/files\/2010\/07\/HD_LookoutMtn1864_preview-264x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"264\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/blogdivided\/files\/2010\/07\/HD_LookoutMtn1864_preview-264x300.jpg 264w, https:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/blogdivided\/files\/2010\/07\/HD_LookoutMtn1864_preview.jpg 565w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 264px) 100vw, 264px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On November 23-25, 1863 the Battle of Chattanooga took place in <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/15590\" target=\"_blank\">Hamilton County<\/a>, Tennessee.\u00a0 Beginning in late September, the Confederate forces under the direction of General <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/5174\" target=\"_blank\">Braxton Bragg\u00a0<\/a> placed Major General <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/11920\" target=\"_blank\">William Rosecrans<\/a>\u2019s Union forces under siege and cut off its supply line.\u00a0 In October and November, Union General <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/5770\" target=\"_blank\">Ulysses S. Grant<\/a> and the Union soldiers were able to capture Orchard Knob, Lookout Mountain, and also forced the Confederates off of Missionary Ridge.\u00a0 The National Park Service\u2019s website provides an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/chch\/historyculture\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">overview\u00a0<\/a>of the battle as well as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/chch\/planyourvisit\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">information<\/a>\u00a0on planning a visit to the battlefield.\u00a0 The website also offers two pamphlets that may be useful: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/history\/history\/online_books\/chch\/wardept\/cc.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Campaign for Chattanooga<\/em>\u00a0<\/a>(1932) and <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/history\/history\/online_books\/hh\/25\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Chickamauga and Chattanooga Battlefields<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(1956). The battle could be connected to a lesson on <a href=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/blogdivided\/2010\/06\/16\/general-sherman%e2%80%99s-march-to-the-sea-november-%e2%80%93-december-1864\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sherman\u2019s March to the Sea in 1864 <\/a>since Union General <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/6570\" target=\"_blank\">William T.\u00a0Sherman<\/a>\u00a0was able to use Chattanooga as the base for his march as a result of the Union victory in 1863.\u00a0 Grant commented on Chattanooga in his <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=8M9_CrdXNYYC&amp;lpg=PR1&amp;dq=grant's%20memoirs&amp;pg=PA357#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\">memoirs<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSherman had, as already stated, crossed to the north side of the Tennessee River at Brown\u2019s ferry, in full view of the troops on Missionary Ridge until they met their assault.\u00a0 Bragg knew it was Sherman\u2019s troops that had crossed, and, they being so long out of view, may have supposed that they had gone up the north bank of the Tennessee River to the relief of Knoxville and that Longstreet was therefore in danger.\u00a0 But the first great blunder, detaching Longstreet, cannot be accounted for in any way I know of.\u00a0 If he had captured Chattanooga, East Tennessee would have fallen without a struggle.\u00a0 It would have been a victory for us to have got our army away from Chattanooga safely.\u00a0 It was a manifold greater victory to drive away the besieging army; a still greater one to defeat that army in his chosen ground and nearly annihilate it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some other resources that may be helpful to browse are <em><a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=POMSAAAAYAAJ&amp;dq=battle%20of%20chattanooga&amp;pg=PA709#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\">Battles and Leaders of the Civil War<\/a><\/em>\u00a0which gives a firsthand account of the campaign and battle from General Grant, and <em><a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=g_0buvOgIp0C&amp;lpg=PA6&amp;dq=battle%20of%20chattanooga&amp;pg=PA8#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\">Three Days Battle at Chattanooga<\/a><\/em>\u00a0which provides a copy of the dispatch on the battle from <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/6249\" target=\"_blank\">General Meigs<\/a>\u00a0to the Secretary of War, <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/6628\" target=\"_blank\">Edwin M.
