{"id":2729,"date":"2010-07-09T14:17:34","date_gmt":"2010-07-09T19:17:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/blogdivided\/?p=2729"},"modified":"2010-07-09T14:17:34","modified_gmt":"2010-07-09T19:17:34","slug":"battle-of-brandy-station-june-9-1863","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/blogdivided\/2010\/07\/09\/battle-of-brandy-station-june-9-1863\/","title":{"rendered":"Battle of Brandy Station, June 9, 1863"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/2129\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2730\" style=\"margin: 10px\" src=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/blogdivided\/files\/2010\/07\/HD_stuartJEB1-251x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"251\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/blogdivided\/files\/2010\/07\/HD_stuartJEB1-251x300.jpg 251w, https:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/blogdivided\/files\/2010\/07\/HD_stuartJEB1.jpg 485w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 251px) 100vw, 251px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On June 9, 1863, the Battle of Brandy Station, also known as the Battle of Fleetwood Hill, took place in <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/9367\" target=\"_blank\">Culpeper County<\/a>, Virginia.\u00a0 Early in the morning, Union Major General <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/6414\" target=\"_blank\">Alfred Pleasonton<\/a>\u00a0and his forces began a surprise attack on the Confederates and General <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/6666\" target=\"_blank\">James Ewell Brown\u00a0Stuart<\/a>.\u00a0 Brandy Station was one of the largest cavalry battles and marked the opening of the Gettysburg Campaign.\u00a0 The National Park Service\u2019s website provides a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/frsp\/brandy.htm\" target=\"_blank\">summary<\/a>\u00a0of the battle as well as a list of different stops and descriptions of each for those planning on visiting or taking a field trip.\u00a0 The Brandy Station Foundation has a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brandystationfoundation.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">website\u00a0<\/a>that includes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brandystationfoundation.com\/lectures-tours\/battlefield_tours.htm\" target=\"_blank\">tour dates<\/a>\u00a0as well as information for visiting\u00a0 Brandy Station\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.brandystationfoundation.com\/pages\/graffiti_house_facts_and_figures.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Graffiti House<\/a>\u201d which contains messages and signatures of Union and Confederate soldiers.\u00a0 In his book, <em>War Years with Jeb Stuart<\/em>, W.W. Blackford <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=T6m17YdCh5cC&amp;lpg=PP1&amp;dq=jeb%20stuart&amp;pg=PA98#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\">commented <\/a>on the battle:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt that time their cavalry could not stand before us at all, and it was not until the great battle on this same ground on the 9th of June, 1863, \u201cFleetwood Fight,\u201d that they offered us any determined resistance.\u00a0 From that time the difficulty of getting remounts acted disastrously upon the strength of our cavalry arm, not only in diminishing the numbers but impairing the spirit of the men.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another resource that may be valuable to look at is Henry McClellan\u2019s book <em><a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=1QZJf1UVL3QC&amp;lpg=PP1&amp;dq=jeb%20stuart&amp;pg=PA294#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\">I Road with Jeb Stuart: the Life and Campaigns of Major General J.E.B. Stuart<\/a><\/em>; both McClellan and Blackford\u2019s recollections provide a firsthand perspective of General Stuart from men who fought alongside him in battle.\u00a0 In terms of modern scholarship, Emory Thomas\u2019s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=vyA2rbUhmb8C&amp;lpg=PR1&amp;dq=jeb%20stuart&amp;pg=PA223#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\">Bold Dragoon: The Life of J.E.B.
