Lee<\/a> and his forces attacked Union Brigadier General Fitz John Porter and sustained high casualties as a result.\u00a0 Although it was declared a Union victory, the Confederate forces were able to push the Union troops to retreat about thirty miles away from <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/9121\" target=\"_blank\">Richmond<\/a> as they advanced.\u00a0 The National Park Service\u2019s website provides a concise <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/rich\/historyculture\/bdcbulletin.htm\" target=\"_blank\">overview<\/a> of the Battle of Beaver Dam Creek and comments on the preservation of the battlefield for those looking to take a field trip to the area.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.civilwar.org\/battlefields\/beaver-dam-creek.html\" target=\"_blank\">Civil War Preservation Trust<\/a> \u2019s website includes a list of recommended readings as well as historical articles on the Seven Days\u2019 Battles.\u00a0 The website also has a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.civilwar.org\/battlefields\/beaver-dam-creek\/maps\/beaverdamcreekmap.html\" target=\"_blank\">map<\/a> that depicts the movement of Union and Confederate troops throughout the course of the fighting.\u00a0 Confederate General Robert E.
