Grant<\/a> \u2019s overland campaign.\u00a0 Grant\u2019s troops attacked General <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/6078\" target=\"_blank\">Robert E. Lee <\/a> and the Army of Northern Virginia on May 5 and a fierce fight broke out between the soldiers.\u00a0 There were high casualties on both sides, including Union General <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/12327\" target=\"_blank\">James Wadsworth <\/a>and Confederate General <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/6003\" target=\"_blank\">John M. Jones<\/a>.\u00a0 The National Park Service\u2019s website provides a detailed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/frsp\/wildspot.htm\" target=\"_blank\">overview<\/a> of the\u00a0fighting and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/frsp\/historyculture\/people.htm\" target=\"_blank\">profiles <\/a> on various historical figures that fought in the battle.\u00a0 Teachers may find the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/frsp\/forteachers\/suggestedreading.htm\" target=\"_blank\"> suggested reading list <\/a> and the information for visiting the battlefield posted on the website useful for planning a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/frsp\/wilder.htm\" target=\"_blank\">fieldtrip<\/a> to the area.\u00a0 The National Park Service also includes a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/frsp\/photosmultimedia\/wildvritual.htm\" target=\"_blank\">virtual tour<\/a> of the battleground for those that cannot make the trip as well as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/frsp\/photosmultimedia\/photogallery.htm?eid=126412&amp;root_aId=173#e_126412\" target=\"_blank\">photos<\/a> of the different sites and monuments.\u00a0 The Civil War Preservation Trust\u2019s website has some interesting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.civilwar.org\/battlefields\/wilderness\/maps\/the-wilderness-may-5-1864.html\" target=\"_blank\">historical maps<\/a> which may be valuable to take a look at. A study of the Battle of the Wilderness may be useful to incorporate into lessons on African American troops in the Civil War since the 43rd USCT served in the Wilderness Campaign along with other <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/32496\" target=\"_blank\">United States Colored Troop <\/a> regiments.\u00a0 A <a href=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/blogdivided\/2010\/05\/20\/43rd-usct-regiment\/\" target=\"_blank\">previous post<\/a> outlines the actions of the 43rd USCT during the Wilderness campaign.\u00a0 Gordon C. Rhea commented on the outcome of the battle in his <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=KBf6KoFIivcC&amp;lpg=PP1&amp;dq=battle%20of%20wilderness&amp;pg=PA439#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\">book<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe recent carnage could be viewed as the opening salvo of a protracted battle to end the war in Virginia.\u00a0 Grant\u2019s directive represented the maturation of his thinking.\u00a0 Lee, Grant was conceding, could not be beaten here.\u00a0 But the campaign was not over.\u00a0 Grant would fight again, next time on the fields that offered him the upper hand.\u00a0 Lincoln\u2019s new commander in chief had been checked, but not defeated. \u201c<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Battle of the Wilderness (also known as Combats at Parker\u2019s Store, Craig\u2019s Meeting House, Todd\u2019s Tavern, Brock Road, and the Furnaces) took place from May 5-7, 1864 in Spotsylvania County, Virginia as a part of Union General Ulysses S.
