{"id":2284,"date":"2010-06-21T20:18:52","date_gmt":"2010-06-22T01:18:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/blogdivided\/?p=2284"},"modified":"2010-07-01T10:23:02","modified_gmt":"2010-07-01T15:23:02","slug":"2284","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/blogdivided\/2010\/06\/21\/2284\/","title":{"rendered":"Frederick Douglass \u2013 Visit to Carlisle in 1872"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/5586\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2283\" title=\"Frederick Douglass\" src=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/blogdivided\/files\/2010\/06\/HD_douglassF1c.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/5586\" target=\"_blank\">Frederick Douglass<\/a> gave a speech in <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/9312\" target=\"_blank\">Carlisle<\/a>, Pennsylvania on March 2, 1872 about his work relating to <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/33180\" target=\"_blank\">Santo Domingo<\/a>. In 1871 President <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/5770\" target=\"_blank\">Ulysses S. Grant<\/a> had appointed Douglass to the Commission of Inquiry for the annexation of Santo Domingo the <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/9093\" target=\"_blank\">United States of America<\/a>. Douglass delivered his speech at Rheem\u2019s Hall, which was located behind the Old Court House in Carlisle. Today that location is a parking lot. Reports about the speech did not appear in any national newspapers, but his visit created a local controversy. George Z. Bentz, who was the manager of the Bentz House and a Republican, refused to let Douglass eat his dinner in hotel dining room with the white guests. (The Bentz House stood on what is today the former Wellington Hotel on East High Street).  The <em>American Volunteer<\/em> used the incident to characterize Republicans as hypocritical. \u201cWe have in this circumstance positive evidence that the Radicals are just as loath to recognize negro-equality as the Democrats,\u201d as the <em>American Volunteer<\/em> observed. While the <em>Herald<\/em> \u201c[found] no fault with\u201d the manager\u2019s decision, the editors argued that policies which denied African Americans entry into a hotel \u201c[were] simply silly and wicked.\u201d In addition, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.historiccarlisle.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Historic Carlisle<\/a> recently added a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecarlislehouse.com\/hciimages\/douglass.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Wayside Maker for Douglass\u2019 visit<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Frederick Douglass gave a speech in Carlisle, Pennsylvania on March 2, 1872 about his work relating to Santo Domingo.
