While Confederates attacked several times, they could not stop Steele\u2019s men from crossing the river with their supplies. Andrew F. Sperry, who served with the 33rd Iowa Infantry Regiment, <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=2LD7_tsh6OcC&amp;pg=PA90&amp;dq=Battle+of+Jenkins+Ferry&amp;hl=en&amp;ei=5r0bTJiZCYa0lQf_sIjGCQ&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=book_result&amp;ct=result&amp;resnum=1&amp;ved=0CCkQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=true\" target=\"_blank\">described <\/a>the battle after the war:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">\u201cThe conflict was terrible to experience, but brief to tell. Seven mortal hours, with such fierce vigor and determination that the fire of musketry became one undistinguishable and unbroken roar. Charge after charge was made by the yelling rebels, only to be broken upon our line, or if possibly succeeding for a moment, to give way at last to a charge of still deeper and more deadly determination from our own brave men.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Confederates \u201cforgot\u2026the valor of Steele\u2019s soldiers,\u201d as <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=kYkNFuHHvx0C&amp;dq=Battle%20of%20Jenkins%20Ferry&amp;pg=PA294#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=true\" target=\"_blank\">another Union veteran explained<\/a>.\u00a0<!--more-->Some estimates put the total <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/history\/hps\/abpp\/battles\/ar016.htm\" target=\"_blank\">number of casualties 964<\/a> (Union 521, CSA 443), including several Union and Confederate generals \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/6479\" target=\"_blank\">Samuel Rice<\/a>, Horace Randal, and <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/6546\" target=\"_blank\">William Scurry<\/a>. Randal and Scurry were, as Confederate General Gen. William R. Boggs <a href=\"http:\/\/docsouth.unc.edu\/fpn\/boggs\/boggs.html\" target=\"_blank\">observed<\/a>, \u201ctwo of our best officers.\u201d\u00a0Confederates could have destroyed Steele\u2019s army, but were unable to take advantage of the opportunity. Joseph Blessington, who served in Walker\u2019s Texas Division, <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/29481\" target=\"_blank\">believed that<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">\u201cHad General Walker received reinforcements when he asked for them, he would have destroyed the enemy, and perhaps have captured their entire army.
