{"id":2220,"date":"2010-06-18T11:49:42","date_gmt":"2010-06-18T16:49:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/blogdivided\/?p=2220"},"modified":"2010-07-21T21:32:01","modified_gmt":"2010-07-22T02:32:01","slug":"the-battle-of-stones-river-december-31-1862-january-3-1863","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/blogdivided\/2010\/06\/18\/the-battle-of-stones-river-december-31-1862-january-3-1863\/","title":{"rendered":"The Battle of Stones River, December 31, 1862- January 3, 1863"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/11920\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2217\" style=\"margin: 10px\" src=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/blogdivided\/files\/2010\/06\/HD_rosecransWSc.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Battle of Stones River (also known as the Battle of Murfreesboro) took place from December 31, 1862- January 3, 1863 in Rutherford County, Tennessee.\u00a0 Confederate General <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/5174\" target=\"_blank\">Braxton Bragg <\/a> and the Army of Tennessee forced Union Major General <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/11920\" target=\"_blank\">William S. Rosecrans<\/a> to the Nashville Pike, but the Union Army of the Cumberland was able to regain a strong position by crossing Stones River.\u00a0 The Confederate forces had to retreat and abandoned the battlefield on January 4-5.\u00a0 The National Park Service\u2019s website provides an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/stri\/historyculture\/battle0.htm\" target=\"_blank\">essay<\/a> detailing the events of the battle and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/stri\/historyculture\/troopmaps.htm?eid=210056&amp;root_aId=195#e_210056\" target=\"_blank\">maps <\/a>depicting troop movement.\u00a0 Other tools for teachers featured on the site are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/stri\/forteachers\/travellingtrunks.htm\" target=\"_blank\">traveling trunks<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/stri\/forteachers\/lessonplansandteacherguides.htm\" target=\"_blank\">lesson plans and teacher guides<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/stri\/historyculture\/specialex.htm\" target=\"_blank\">exhibits<\/a> which provide students with an opportunity to learn about the Battle of Stones River interactively.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.civilwar.org\/battlefields\/stones-river.html\" target=\"_blank\">Civil War Preservation Trust<\/a>\u2019 s website includes a list of recommended books for the subject as well as several related historical articles.\u00a0 Also available on the website are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.civilwar.org\/battlefields\/stonesriver\/stones-river-maps\/topographical-sketch-of-the.html\" target=\"_blank\">historical maps<\/a> and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cwpt\/sets\/72157617434986165\/\" target=\"_blank\">photo gallery<\/a>.\u00a0 Another selection on Google Books in limited view is<a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=CvZ4yzYqvEsC&amp;lpg=PP1&amp;dq=battle%20of%20Stone's%20river&amp;pg=PA59#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\"> <\/a><em><a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=CvZ4yzYqvEsC&amp;lpg=PP1&amp;dq=battle%20of%20Stone's%20river&amp;pg=PA59#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\">No Better Place to Die: the Battle of Stones River<\/a><\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=CvZ4yzYqvEsC&amp;lpg=PP1&amp;dq=battle%20of%20Stone's%20river&amp;pg=PA59#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\"> <\/a> as it gives a fairly detailed preview of the battle and\u00a0there are also different reports from the battle&#8217;s\u00a0commanding\u00a0officers\u00a0in Volume 20 of the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/dlxs2.library.cornell.edu\/cgi\/t\/text\/pageviewer-idx?c=moawar;cc=moawar;q1=battle%20of%20stones%20river;rgn=full%20text;idno=waro0029;didno=waro0029;view=image;seq=80;page=root;size=s;frm=frameset\" target=\"_blank\">Official Records<\/a><\/em>. Alexander F. Stevenson commented on this event\u00a0in his <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=O9-wzyI73qwC&amp;dq=battle%20of%20Stone's%20river&amp;pg=PA147#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\">account<\/a> of the battle:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt 11 o\u2019clock that night the rebel army commenced its retreat, and long before day break its infantry was miles away on the road towards Tullahoma and Shelbyville, while their cavalry withdrew slowly at daybreak, burning bridges as they moved south.\u00a0 While this retrograde movement of General Bragg\u2019s army was going on, and each hour of this Sunday night was widening the distances between contending forces, our men lay in the muddy and rain-drenched ground, ready to attack at the earliest dawn to repel the enemy\u2019s attacks.\u00a0 Soon, however, a report came, incredible at first, that the enemy had evacuated Murfreesboro\u2019.\u00a0 Can it be true? was in everybody\u2019s mouth, but few believed it; others argued that some hired spy had probably brought the news, to draw us out of our position, that the battle might be continued a few miles south of Murfreesboro\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Battle of Stones River (also known as the Battle of Murfreesboro) took place from December 31, 1862- January 3, 1863 in Rutherford County, Tennessee.\u00a0 Confederate General Braxton Bragg and the Army of Tennessee forced Union Major General William S.
