Lee <\/a> and the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia defeated <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/5770\" target=\"_blank\">Ulysses S. Grant<\/a> and the Army of the Potomac.\u00a0\u00a0On June 3,\u00a0the Union II,\u00a0XVIII, and IX Corps attacked the Confederates at the Bethesda Church-Cold Harbor line and were\u00a0massacred.\u00a0 The casualties sustained by the Union Army led Grant to say that\u00a0 \u201cthis charge seemed to revive [Confederate] hopes temporarily.\u201d\u00a0 The National Park Service\u2019s\u00a0 website provides an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/rich\/historyculture\/cold-harbor.htm\" target=\"_blank\">overview<\/a> of the battle that recounts the day to day activity of the fighting as well as a list of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/rich\/historyculture\/union-units.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Union<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/rich\/historyculture\/confederate-units.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Confederate<\/a> troops present at the battle.\u00a0 The National Parks Service\u2019s website also includes a list of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/rich\/forteachers\/suggestedreading.htm\" target=\"_blank\">suggested readings<\/a> for teachers and offers interactive <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/rich\/forteachers\/travellingtrunks.htm\" target=\"_blank\">travel trunks <\/a> that are available for loan to classes.\u00a0 There is a link available that presents visitors with a map\u00a0 of different stops throughout a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/rich\/historyculture\/cold-harbor-tour.htm\" target=\"_blank\">tour<\/a> of the battlefield and gives suggestions for teachers to plan a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/rich\/forteachers\/planafieldtrip.htm\" target=\"_blank\">fieldtrip<\/a> to the battleground.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.civilwar.org\/battlefields\/cold-harbor.html\" target=\"_blank\">Civil War Preservation Trust<\/a> \u2019s website has links to suggested readings, online resources, and battle facts about the events at\u00a0Cold Harbor.\u00a0 The site includes a map that details the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.civilwar.org\/battlefields\/coldharbor\/cold-harbor-maps\/coldharborsnedon.html\" target=\"_blank\">plan of battle <\/a>for the Union and Confederate forces.\u00a0 Another resource that may be interesting to browse is Gordon C. Rhea\u2019s<em> <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=N4LiUzw5vjUC&amp;lpg=PA444&amp;dq=Second%20Cold%20Harbor&amp;pg=PA181#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Cold Harbor: Grant and Lee, May 26-June 3, 1864<\/em> <\/a>, available in limited view on Google Books, which gives a rather detailed preview regarding the events of the battle.\u00a0 Grant commented on the battle in his <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=tUEOAAAAIAAJ&amp;pg=PA264&amp;dq=Battle+of+Cold+Harbor&amp;hl=en&amp;ei=l4QXTMO0BML48Ab7-KWXCQ&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=book_result&amp;ct=result&amp;resnum=3&amp;ved=0CDEQ6AEwAg#v=onepage&amp;q=Battle%20of%20Cold%20Harbor&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\">memoirs<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have always regretted that the last assault on Cold Harbor was ever made.\u00a0 I might say the same thing of the assault of the 22 of May, 1863, at Vicksburg.\u00a0 At Cold Harbor no advantage was ever gained to compensate for the heavy loss we sustained.\u00a0 Indeed, the advantages other than those of relative losses, were on the Confederate side.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Battle of Cold Harbor (also known as Second Cold Harbor) took place in Hanover County, Virginia from May 31-June 12, 1864.\u00a0 As a part of the overland campaign to Richmond of 1864 General Robert E.
