Lee<\/a> invaded Maryland, he sent General <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/5967\" target=\"_blank\">Thomas \u201cStonewall\u201d Jackson<\/a> to capture the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry. Col. Dixon S. Miles ordered his forces to retreat into the town in response to Jackson\u2019s attack, which Col. Dixon S. Miles\u2019s response. After the war Union General Julius White <a href=\"http:\/\/dlxs2.library.cornell.edu\/cgi\/t\/text\/pageviewer-idx?c=cent;cc=cent;q1=Harper%20s%20Ferry;rgn=full%20text;view=image;seq=0316;idno=cent0033-2;node=cent0033-2:17\" target=\"_blank\">argued that<\/a> \u201c[Col. Miles] had lost all confidence in his ability\u201d and explained that the high ground around <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/19516\" target=\"_blank\">Harpers Ferry<\/a> was critical to defense: \u201cHarper\u2019s Ferry is not defensible by a force inferior to that attacking it, unless the surrounding heights be well fortified, and each of them held by a force sufficient to maintain itself unsupported by others.\u201d<br \/>\nTeachers can learn more about this battle from a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/hafe\/historyculture\/1862-battle-of-harpers-ferry.htm\" target=\"_blank\">short essay<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/hafe\/historyculture\/confederate-positions-around-harpers-ferry.htm\" target=\"_blank\">related maps<\/a> on the National Parks Service <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/hafe\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">website<\/a>.
