After General Franklin Gardner received reports that confirmed the Confederate <a href=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/blogdivided\/2010\/06\/04\/siege-of-vicksburg-mississippi\/\" target=\"_blank\">defeat at Vicksburg<\/a>,  he surrendered his forces to General <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/5033\" target=\"_blank\">Nathaniel P. Banks<\/a> on July 9, 1863. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/hps\/abpp\/battles\/la010.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Some estimates<\/a> put the total number of casualties during the siege at 12,208 (Union 5,000 \/ CSA 7,208). The National Park Service offers a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/history\/NR\/twhp\/wwwlps\/lessons\/71hudson\/71hudson.htm\" target=\"_blank\">great lesson<\/a> plan about Port Hudson through their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/nr\/twhp\/descrip.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Teaching with Historic Places program<\/a>. Port Hudson may not be that well known, but as General <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/5770\" target=\"_blank\">Ulysses S. Grant<\/a> explained in his <em><a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=itMg4EjWU6oC&amp;dq=Personal%20Memoirs%20of%20U.S.%20Grant&amp;pg=PA475#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=true\" target=\"_blank\">Personal Memoirs<\/a><\/em> (1885-1886), the Union\u2019s victory on July 9 was a significant one. \u201cFrom that day to the close of the rebellion the Mississippi River, from its source to its mouth, remained in the control of the National troops,\u201d as Grant noted.
