Lee<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/5967\" target=\"_blank\">Maj. Gen. Thomas \u201cStonewall\u201d Jackson<\/a> had 40,000 fewer soldiers fighting at the Battle of Chancellorsville, Virginia than <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/11941\" target=\"_blank\">Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker\u2019s<\/a> Union troops.\u00a0 Nonetheless, General Lee executed what historian <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/16909\" target=\"_blank\">John Murrin<\/a> has labeled \u201cthe riskiest operation of his career\u201d coming out victorious on May 8, 1863 after seven days of fighting.\u00a0 William Swinton, in his 1882 analysis <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=BcijwI7-eq4C&amp;lpg=PA299&amp;dq=Battle%20of%20Chancellorsville&amp;lr&amp;as_drrb_is=b&amp;as_minm_is=1&amp;as_miny_is=1990&amp;as_maxm_is=1&amp;as_maxy_is=2010&amp;as_brr=1&amp;pg=PP1#v=onepage&amp;q=Battle%20of%20Chancellorsville&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Campaigns of the Army of the Potomac<\/em><\/a>, credits Hooker with the mistake of taking a defensive stance and leaving his \u201cright flank thrown out \u2018in the air,\u2019\u201d and giving Lee the opportunity to attack.\u00a0 The Civil War Preservation Trust provides an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.civilwar.org\/battlefields\/chancellorsville\/maps\/first-day-at-chancellorsville.html\" target=\"_blank\">interactive map of the battle<\/a>, which shows the forces\u2019 movements over the course of May 1st.\u00a0 Though the Confederacy won the Battle of Chancellorsville, Stonewall Jackson was mortally wounded by his own troops on May 2nd, \u201cthe event of the Chancellorsville conflict which caused intense sorrow to the enemy [the Confederate troops],\u201d according to Samuel Bates\u2019 <em><a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=ZJYBAAAAMAAJ&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;dq=The+Battle+of+Chancellorsville&amp;lr=&amp;as_brr=1&amp;cd=2#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\">The Battle of Chancellorsville<\/a> <\/em>(1882), and \u201cwas regarded as entailing the greatest injury to their cause.\u201d\u00a0 The Virginia Military Institute, where Jackson was a member of the faculty from 1851 until 1861, has an online research center with an extensive <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vmi.edu\/archives.aspx?id=3747&amp;ekmensel=fb5d653b_207_281_btnlink\" target=\"_blank\">Stonewall Jackson exhibit<\/a>. Their Jackson exhibit includes a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vmi.edu\/archives.aspx?id=6983&amp;ekmensel=fb5d653b_207_281_6983_2\" target=\"_blank\">photo gallery<\/a>, a collection of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vmi.edu\/archives.aspx?id=4931&amp;ekmensel=fb5d653b_207_281_4931_3\" target=\"_blank\">Jackson\u2019s papers<\/a> available as originals or transcriptions, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vmi.edu\/archives.aspx?id=4927&amp;ekmensel=fb5d653b_207_281_4927_5\" target=\"_blank\">Jackson family genealogy<\/a>, as well as an informational <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vmi.edu\/archives.aspx?id=4933&amp;ekmensel=fb5d653b_207_281_4933_4\" target=\"_blank\">timeline and biography<\/a>. The Battle of Chancellorsville has also been preserved as part of the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania County Battlefields Memorial by the National Parks Service.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/frsp\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">NPS website<\/a> includes a wide variety of resources for teachers including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/frsp\/historyculture\/trpmaps.htm\" target=\"_blank\">\u201ctroop position maps\u201d<\/a> for May 2nd and May 3rd, links to General Lee and Hooker\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/frsp\/historyculture\/cvillehistory.htm\" target=\"_blank\">official reports<\/a>, as well as an extensive list of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/frsp\/forteachers\/suggestedreading.htm\" target=\"_blank\">suggested readings<\/a> on the battle which range from firsthand accounts to children&#8217;s books.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Confederate forces under the command of General Robert E.
