Early<\/a> whose <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=0xtCAAAAIAAJ&amp;dq=autobiographical%20Sketch%20and%20Narrative%20of%20the%20War%20Between%20States&amp;as_brr=1&amp;pg=PA387#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\">memoir<\/a> provides an interesting account of the battle from the Confederate perspective.\u00a0 Major General <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/12202\" target=\"_blank\">Lew Wallace<\/a> (who later on became better known as the author of the novel <em>Ben Hur<\/em>) and the Union forces attempted to arrest Early and the Confederate forces, but were defeated.\u00a0 General <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/5770\" target=\"_blank\">Ulysses S. Grant <\/a>highlighted the importance of the battle\u00a0through an excerpt from his <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=Z5B-eOn_Pb4C&amp;dq=grant's%20memoirs%20volume%202&amp;as_brr=1&amp;pg=PA522#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\">memoir<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">\u201cIf Early had been but one day earlier, he might have entered the Capital before the arrival of the reinforcements I had sent.\u00a0 Whether the delay caused by the battle [Monocacy] amounted to a day or not, General Wallace, on this occasion, by the defeat of the troops under him, contributed to a greater benefit to the cause than often falls to the lot of a commander of an equal force to render by means of a victory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are several other interesting books which could be valuable to learning about the Battle of Monocacy from both the Union and Confederate perspectives.\u00a0 Along with Early\u2019s memoir, John H.
