Camp William Penn, which was located outside Philadelphia, was a critical part of the effort to train African Americans for service in the USCT during the Civil War. Over 10,000 men were trained at the camp between 1863 and 1865.  While \u201cthe record is mute\u201d as to who picked the location outside Philidelphia for building the camp, Wert notes that \u201cwhoever\u2026[it was] chose wisely.\u201d \u201cThe training site was located near \u2018Roadsite,\u2019\u201d which has Wert explains, was \u201cthe home of abolitionists James and Lucretia Mott.\u201d <i>Pennsylvania History<\/i>, which is the official journal of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pa-history.org\/pahistory.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Pennsylvania Historical Association<\/a>, is available through a <a href=\"http:\/\/dpubs.libraries.psu.edu\/DPubS?service=UI&amp;version=1.0&amp;verb=Display&amp;page=home&amp;handle=psu.ph\" target=\"_blank\">digital archive<\/a> that contains all of the issues published between 1934 and 2005.
